Passenger Seat Radio Episode 2021-08-16

Special Guest with me in the Passenger Seat! Mike Mike Lorrain joins me for movies, video games, volcanoes .. what DON’T we talk about in this special episode!

Hello everybody this is Shane R. Monroe and you are in the passenger seat with me it’s passenger seat radio. It is August 16 2021 and I am right here at my desk. We’re using the spreaker for Windows application you can hear the absence of water the absence of road noise. I’m sitting right here and I have a very special guest today this is the first time I think I’ve ever had well other than family. I’ve had family on the show, but not really a special guest Mike Lorraine from the watchman is here. You might know him from Mike’s five minute gaming videos you might know him from the movie frayed I’ve talked about that Mike’s a big a big supporter and fan of the show welcome Mike to the show. Thanks for having me Shane. It’s a truly an honor to be sitting in the virtual passenger seat with you for the first time it’s amazing back when you and I were kicking it old school with our Commodore 60 fours I don’t ever believe there was a thought that at some point in time we would be sitting here virtually on the internet you know hundreds of miles away just shooting the breeze like this and reminiscing about old times and talking movies and stuff It’s unbelievable. It’s really cool and it’s neat for me being in the Seattle area which is pretty close to when he is I feel like in a way I’m kind of I’m still in your home state and so maybe there’s a little bit of a cool connection there right so if I talk to you about you know the Chucky cheese that was in toquilla right that mean that would be I would I wouldn’t have to explain the tuck will is not a Mad Magazine sound effect right? Absolutely. Bless the we both can get the pronunciation correct of all these cities and towns around here. They’re named after Indian tribes. That’s right. Yeah. Kima and Spokane. What did I hear? I heard one on TV the other day. I just wanted to throw something at the TV. You think you know listen, you’re spending millions of dollars making these movies and TV shows. Why is there nobody around like help you with odd pronunciations? That seems like a no brainer. That seems to be easy. It happens all the time. Whenever news stories are done out here and they bring news people out here they always get the names wrong. I mean, Oregon, that was another one I heard. I mean, I would except I’ll close well, and I’ve experienced newscasters thinking that Mount Rainier is Mount St. Helens, and no I heard that happened one time and someone said no, no, Mount St. Helens is the one with its top blown off. Yeah, the whole side of the mountain is gone now. And you can find pieces of it in Russia. Unbelievable. Yeah. Have you seen that new that new Mount St. Helens documentary? Unbelievable. I it’s on my watch list. So you’ve seen it It’s really good. It is so good. I mean listen, you and I lived through that I was in at the time I was over in Idaho. In Kerry wood. And listen, it sounds like well that’s a way far away from Mount St. Helens dude, considering the ash circled the globe like three times. I mean, it was nighttime, in the middle of the day in Cary, what Idaho when Mount St. Helens blew. So yeah, do a whole show about that. on what’s uh, where were you when Mount St. Helens when I was halfway up, what is called Chinook pass at whistling jack lodge for breakfast with my grandmother and my parents and my sister. And my grandma was heading over the past home, we had breakfast with her and we were outside. And I remember seeing these huge rain clouds. What we thought were rain clouds coming in. But it was ash. And you know, back then there are no cell phones, no internet. And the only way you kind of could figure out what was going on was word of mouth or the radio or TV. Yeah. And the the TV was always behind like the radio, for some reason was always like miles ahead. So imagine not opening up your phone and unlocking your phone to find out what’s going on. But to turn on a radio. That’s how we did it. Yeah, yeah. Speaking of that, one quick little story. driving back, we had the radio on in the car. And it was ended up being talk radio, kind of like what we’re doing now. And this DJ was just taking calls because people were asking questions. They were scared, they were worried. And this one lady, this old lady she calls in and she goes, I just want to know, what are we going to do about helping all the birds? Wow, how will we help the birds? And we’re all thinking the birds. That’s the least of our concern. We have so much more to deal with right now. Man, yeah, yeah. Oh my god. So this is a really good documentary man. It’s really, really good and There’s a lot of archive materials I mean, we’ve seen the same 10 clips of Mount St. Helens we’ve seen the same I think it’s the time lapsed shots of that. And they’re really really impressive right? They’ve got like footage that they’ve done remastering on and all this stuff and it looks great it’s almost to the point we’re going dude, is that CG? Did they CG that or is that like did they really go in and and remaster video we’ve never seen It’s really good, scary as hell to honestly if you if you’ve never lived near a volcano that erupts which, you know, I was just thinking about that. How many people do you personally know that were within a couple 100 mile radius of a volcano erupting the the numbers probably pretty small or none? Yeah, that’s really zero. It may be Yeah, but yeah, this is called by the way for those of you who are feverishly trying to figure out which one we’re talking about it’s called surviving the Mount St. Helens disaster. That’s the that’s the one you want to pick that up. It’s in C it it’s about it’s 45 minutes long. It’s an easy watch. Really good stuff, eyewitness accounts, nutty and you know the one thing I’ll add Shane, and I’ve said this to too many people when we talk about the Mount St. Helens eruption, it wasn’t just that everything got blacked out in the middle of the day where it felt like nighttime and the one thing it doesn’t matter what documentary you watch or what story you read, the one thing I never see talked about was the smell it’s the smell it was a sulfuric intense smell that was so bad you really couldn’t be outside I remember sticking my head out the door and just gone wow and closing the door It was awful Do you remember that chain I do I do now now I’m sure there was a little bit of loss between where you were versus you know hundreds and hundreds of miles away But yeah, I totally remember the smell and it’s funny because you mentioning it like brought the smell into my into my memory and I had I had not remembered that until you brought it up but yeah i mean i remember drawing my name like like you’re writing in snow I remember going outside and drawing in the ash yeah my my family owned and I think my mother still has a picture of this somewhere I wonder if we’re if she still has it she has a picture of a Pinto a car a Pinto car covered in ash and it says like it she is somebody wrote on it. St Helens 1980 or something like that on the windshield in the inside the ash I mean that’s just that’s just crazy. Yeah, unbelievable. Yeah, well, I could I could go on and on but I figure maybe we should talk movies or something. There’s always something new to talk about. So let me see I did have a couple of things that I had on my list Let me see if there’s anything they’d be fun to cover with you. Let me see here. You open up my keep list I threw a couple of new items on here since the last show Oh Castle binita bought by South Park that’s on my list you want to talk about that? We can I think I listened to another podcast I follow talking about the deal with is Matt Parker and tres stone I think and then there was someone else that it was like $900 million 900 names yes to have their names on it they don’t even have to do any work insane but wasn’t there what I really thought was kind of wild was part of that was a 14 picture deal now I’m assuming when I see picture or feature like that I think film and how many South Park movies have there been right there’s been one right so over the course of this Oh, and it was it was Reese Witherspoon that’s who it was reasonable to it was her and and Matt and Trey Yeah, it was $900 million deal. Rhys weather seems that’s part of this thing. Yeah, help secure. nothing in common until now. Wow, you might have you might have just said Cameron Diaz and it would have just been just as crazy. I mean, I know she’s trying to diversify instead of acting but yeah, 900 million. That’s crazy. But yeah, Casa Bonita. I actually driven by their thanks to Chad I went to visit Chad over in Colorado Springs. And so we actually drove by Castle binita and it’s like, oh my god, it’s real. I mean, you see it on the on South Park and it’s like there’s there’s actually Cliff divers in there or they’re like, Oh, yeah, it’s all in there. And it’s like, wow, it’s a real place but it’s so funny that I will admit I I’ve never been a big watcher of South Park. Not that I don’t like it. It’s just not been one of my watches, but I’ve The pinball virtual pinball on the pinball effects southpark many times Oh yeah, so you’re practically you’re practically You know, you’re practically a fan, right? Yeah, no southpark that is on pinball FX two. I don’t know if you know that, but they didn’t continue that over to FX three. It was one of those licensing things. So if you want to play South Park, pinball on pinball effects you have to on Steam have version two, which I actually do oddly enough, I should play pick that up before the license disappears completely. It’s a weird one. Yeah. any of that stuff makes me mental. You know, I’m waiting for all of the music in. So one of the things that I’ll segue over to this. So one of the things I’m really excited about with this new valve steam deck is to be able to have Call of Duty Infinite Warfare zombies in Spaceland in a portable player, right? Something a portable playing device, because let’s be honest Call of Duty other than some nasty little mobile version doesn’t appear on anything portable. And I am dying to be able to run around with Hasselhoff shooting zombies, and I’m really excited about that. Have you you’ve played zombies in Spaceland, I assume, or at least know something about it. I’ve heard of it. I’ve not played it. You know, my question for you, though, on that. And maybe you’ve addressed this in one of your other things that I missed, but the resolution of that screen is still like 1280 by 720. So I’ve wondered about games, like you’re talking about about being able to read the text just in either HUD information, downward tab stuff, what do you think about that? Well, I’ll tell you what, I know what happens when developers don’t retro, retro back and fix that stuff. So there are a number of PC ports on the switch. And this is the only reason I know about this, that the developers decided not to not to go back and redo the HUD stuff. In other words, you’re talking about the text and the overlays that tell you what buttons to push, or, you know, you know, interactive pieces of the game that you need to be able to see in order to play the damn thing. Now I’ve played so much Infinite Warfare, it’ll just be like riding a bike for me. But for somebody brand new, that can’t quite read what a fate and fortune card might be. I could see that being a real problem. And I’ll tell you exactly how I got around it on the switch which is ridiculous. And I hope that it doesn’t turn out this way. But I can’t remember the name of the game I should give it a plug even though I didn’t care for it. It was a it was like a turn based strategy game. Iron something or another. If I had a live if we had a live audience right now they’d be able to tell you what it was. But the the resolution is so small, you can’t read anything and as a huge tutorial, lots of text to read. I ended up having to dock the switch and then looking at it on a 32 inch monitor and that’s how I ended up consuming enough of the HUD in order to make the game playable without being able to actually read the HUD all the time. And then again, you could also do that with the you could do that with the steam deck too right plugging into a monitor and then you could consume the HUD to your requirements and then move on so I don’t like that you know I I’m glad you’re talking about the steam deck and I pre ordered one just like you excuse me the sadly I mentioned this to you in our own chat, but just I feel like I kind of have to forget about it for now. It feels so far away. I now I know and the only thing that it’s really good by the way, congratulations, you all get to hear my dog’s bark. I think I think that they’re going to be dribbling and keeping the information fresh and interesting for the coming months. And if you think about it, I mean I know it sounds like oh my god, it’s going to be forever It’s going to be forever. In truth The first one is going to be shipping in four months. I mean, that’s not that’s not a grotesque amount of time. I mean, it is when you’re waiting for it. Yeah, but some of us of course I mean, I was I think you were in the same position as I was you’re a q1 2022 estimated delivery, right? Yes, nine q x. I’m q2 because I ordered the premium one. Yeah, one with the most space. But I’ll tell you a shame though. We are living in a time where everything is delayed. I know and I I am expecting this to be delayed. I just I’m with you. Because everything is it is so it is I mean that deck of gear that I’m waiting patiently for that was supposed to be like summer 2021 should be on the shelves. Very, very quiet right now. So I mean, I know it has to do with you know, with supply delays and things of that nature. I backed a backed. Here’s another interesting story I don’t think I’ve talked about here on the show. I backed a very interesting Kickstarter. It is for a wireless Android Auto receiver for your car. Right so Android Auto, and I think you’re an apple guy. So you might not be super savvy on this one, but hold on. There I am not an apple gal. You’re not sorry. I know you can’t put me in that. Apple guy. Why am I thinking that? I don’t know. I sorry. I apologize. vehemently. Apologize. I’m just so used to it right away. Listen, I appreciate I am an It’s ridiculous. I am I am not an apple fan, and have not been for years. And I can talk about that on another show about my unhappiness with Apple from a long time ago. I, I am, I’m with you. Strike that from the record, please. Mike is not an apple. I’ve got just so many so many people that I deal with are and so it’s just easier, I’d be more right than wrong by insinuating somebody was an apple supporter. But anyway, so if you’re familiar with Android Auto, I’m assuming especially if you’re traveling all the time, right? Well, actually, I’m not I mean, I have my I drive a lease. Toyota Sienna minivan, it’s for my filmmaking work. And I just have it you know, my phone connects to it through the Bluetooth just for calls. But Right, right, that’s that’s Toyota’s own internal software. So I am not familiar with Android Auto. Auto is really great. Except for the wire right? So now me I’m Mr. wire, I always want everything wired I want my computer’s wired to the network. I want my game consoles wired. I’m a big fan of, listen, I want the best possible performance, if it means a wire, like on my valve index. I’m okay with that. What I like wireless, of course, but I’m not willing to sacrifice sometimes to get that. So, back to Android Auto, because I can totally get on a whole segue other thing about question index. So Android Auto is really, really cool. It’s just like for those Apple people out there, which I do have listeners who are Apple users, it’s just like CarPlay, you plug your phone into it, and it’s got a head unit. Usually it’s the same thing that runs your GPS and your touchscreen for your the controls of your vehicle. And it comes up with basically an Android operating system or specific OS designed to give you car friendly access to the applications that support it on your phone. So like maps, right? That’s, that’s the first thing that pops into your head maps, music, things of that nature. All of these apps are designed to run inside of this Android Auto sort of an operating system, but it’s all wired it makes me mental, especially the fact that coming as of last year, there are wireless Android Auto heads. In fact, my wife was she rented a car up in Oregon to go see my daughter recently, she had a rental that had wireless Android Auto. And I and she was telling me about him I am so jealous. I mean, I got a 2018 accord. I do not have the option to go wireless, and it makes me mental that I have to plug a cable and I won’t do it. I’m with you. I just hook it to Bluetooth, listen to my music and call it a day. But if I use maps, I like to have that big giant screen where it’s giving me directions over the speakers blah, blah, blah. So I grudgingly plug it in. Well, there’s an interesting Kickstarter to circle back around. There’s a Kickstarter that promises a little unit that you plug into your Android Auto USB port on the car, that then makes your Android Auto experience wireless, whatever type of pad that you have. And I’m like yeah, yeah, now we’re talking Oh, yeah, I can’t wait to get it do delay after delay after delay after delay. And then they had some GPS problem with the first run units. They said, Listen, if you can live with it. Great. We’ll send it to you. But you should probably wait for the next one. Of course, I’m waiting for the next one. And so yeah, I mean, that’s just one example of many of we’re getting excited about something and it’s just it’s not coming. Well, it’s funny no word pun intended, but repeating delay over and over. I also think of just that’s an issue with wireless Bluetooth that no matter what you do is there’s delay and that’s another reason like you I prefer a hardwire connection, if at all possible. And also you and I are both big time troubleshooters, we’re always helping others with their technical problems and you don’t have Wi Fi it knocks off one possible issue out of the troubleshooting pipeline when you’re trying to just figure out why something’s not connecting or working. I will share it. Speaking of which I will share another story we have a Wi Fi printer. It’s a brother printer. I don’t remember the model number off the top of my head You think I would buy now that printer has been nothing but trouble. And you know why? It’s nothing but trouble because it’s on the Wi Fi. Always a problem my wife. It’s not going to print it won’t print. I don’t know why it won’t print. It won’t wake up out of sleep mode. When I hit print. You run the test page out of it. It says yeah, I’m connected to your Wi Fi. Here’s the IP address. I tried to connect to the IP address to add the printer to my machine. Nope, doesn’t exist. What You know what? I went and bought her yesterday. In fact, yesterday I went and bought her a USB 2.0 cable at Walmart. Can you believe first of all that you can buy that at Walmart? And second, I plugged it in. Not another problem ever? Well, I mean, it’s only been a day, but I mean, it was like letting her out of prison to wire her. I mean, most people be like, Oh, you got to tether me down. I can’t stand it. I gotta have wireless dude, forget about that. You want what works and works well. And sometimes it’s a while when you’ve dealt with the problems. It’s great to solve them that way and be done with it and move on to something else. More printers, the bane of my Listen, I enjoy a challenge. I enjoy technical challenge from time to time. I’m done with that one. I don’t ever want to see that again, ever. I mean, yes, my wife has very similar problems printing to Wi Fi. And I’m I’m constantly troubleshooting whether it’s that I joke I hear it won’t print. Right? That’s it. I hear that courts. It was printed today before? Yep. And nothing has changed. That’s the part that makes me crazy. And these people that think that somehow, like via a wire or you know, wireless VR is not going to have latency and lag and stutters it’s like yeah, but it’s you know, even Wi Fi six it’s, it’s, it’s still subjective to these environmental things you can’t control just makes me crazy. Well, you know, there’s a whole psychology I’ve worked on when it comes to talking with people. So on the cell phone, because of those delays you’re talking about, what I’ve learned is, a lot of times when you’re talking, you think they didn’t hear you and so you repeat yourself, you say you start a sentence, but because it took them a minute to hear you. They’re still talking and you think, oh, maybe they didn’t hear me psychologically. So you start over. And what I’ve learned is just just blaze on through with that sentence. Don’t start over. And it’s your brain, you have to tell your brain, no, they are going to hear everything I said, I have to just keep talking. And that’s it’s all because of the delay even you and I talking we have our own delay we’re dealing with and I know that sometimes if you’re talking and I want to say something I need to just continue through and not repeat myself, which I only did that with when I had to cut you off about the apple. And I appreciate you doing so that’s that’s a that’s cause for libel and slander. And that’s the last thing we want in here is to talk politics, religion or anything lab libelous. So, yeah, I’ll tell you, you know, it makes me mental that people, you know, just in general, one of the biggest one of the biggest questions that I get asked from the VR community, because I’m really I’m asking elbows in to beat Sabre, and custom maps, and I have tools and utilities that I write for that stuff, which I’m asking elbows in working on, even as we speak, but you know, I get asked a lot, you know, should I buy beat Sabre? For the quest or for the PC? You know, should I play it wirelessly on the PC? Or should I play it natively on the quest, because everyone’s tired of having to chase custom songs on the quest, and they’re tired of mods breaking on the quest, and blah, blah, blah, everyone’s tired of that. So they’re all moving over to the PC, but they don’t want the cable, they don’t want the wire. And so it’s like, and I keep telling them, I don’t recommend you play beat Sabre wirelessly. Because Listen, this is a precision rhythm game. I mean, listen, if you want to play Half Life, Alyx, or you want to play some other game, that where you’re, you’re in a passive environment, and you have your time to look around, you’re playing missed, you’re playing whatever, that’s fine. You’re talking about these latencies? And of course, they believe whatever numbers thrown at them, right? So there’s some number that says there are 27 millisecond latency. So that’s that should be fine. Well, that’s just that leg. Dude. That’s, that’s what the the software’s reporting back. That’s not what’s real. You know? And so it’s like, and some people will be like, well, it works fine for me, works fine. For me. It’s like, no, it doesn’t, because it’s technically impossible for it to work right for you. Let me explain you why you think it works, right? And so I go on this whole tirade, I’ve, I’ve had to record this, like five or six times on Reddit and everywhere else, just like and refer back to it. You are adapting to latency. That’s why you’re scoring well on these songs. That’s why you don’t think that it’s broken when you’re wireless, because you have adapted to 50 6070 millisecond latency. And yes, just because you can score a double s rating on expert plus doesn’t mean it’s not broken. It means you aren’t playing the game as it was intended. Those mappers that are are painstakingly creating, you know, five millisecond sub five millisecond timings on these blocks and these maps that spent dozens of hours You are insulting them and embarrassing me to quote Indiana Jones are insulting them and embarrassing me by by playing these maps with latency. I think about that. And you know, everything you’re talking about can also be parallel right over to virtual pinball sustained really slipper latency. Same thing. Yeah, you can have a big issue where, as my friend Dave says, you have to adjust your brain, you have to adjust your brain by a certain amount of milliseconds to basically counter what you’re dealing with, like you’re talking about in the beat saver, or pinball. So I’m curious about that since you bring it up, right. So I mean, listen as a as an avid, both digital and analog pinball player. I do know that every pinball machine has a certain amount of what’s the what’s the term button reaction speed, right. So on some, some machines, if you touch the flipper buttons, and you push it in 16th of an inch, it activates the flipper, some of them yet to push them in more. So almost every machine has a certain amount of it’s not latency, but it’s hardware adjustment period. Right? Are you talking about a real physical, real physical, real machine? Right? Yeah. Beside the flipper buttons, there is a leaf switch for most machines, at least the you know, the older ones, the newer ones. Now they they I haven’t looked at the new ones. They probably saw it but it’s a leaf switch. So it’s just a contact, that when you push the button, it makes contacts and then sends the signal and it’s it’s fast. I mean, that’s it’s old school fast. As you know, it really what my friend Dave, who’s kind of my engineer, buddy, he has said often is when you deal with USB, anything USB, you’re introducing latency right off the bat, right? So flipper buttons that have sub some type of USB connectivity right away, you’ve got something you got to deal with. And that’s just when when you play pinball, man, it’s like beat Sabre, you need things to be absolutely perfectly right on because that’s what your brain your brain wants. So when it comes to virtual pinball, though, you know, The advice I’d give to your listeners, if any of them love virtual pinball as much as you and me and you want to play it on the PC with the minimal amount of latency, you absolutely need 160 or 144 hertz monitor, if you with V sync, and well I’m sorry g sync something like that. What if you’ve got that that will solve so many problems Shane, do you have that I actually have a G sync monitor and a G sync compatible video card and so I’ve got the advantage of that. I do not know about the AMD version of that the freesync or any of the other ones but i do i game on a G sync monitor with a G sync compatible GPU? I don’t know if I can call on it right? Oh absolutely. I’ll be I’ll be truthful now. Most of my pinball I play on portable devices which is a crying shame To be honest, I will I will admit to my fallacy but pinball to me is a filler thing like candy crush is to most mortals pinball is for me when I need to kill a few minutes I’m laying in bed or I’m sitting on the train might not sit on train but you know it’s a filler it’s a I will fire I have pinball installed on every portable device that I have of one nature or another because I find it an amazing filler of time. Well, you know what? I’m going to quote you Shane from retro gaming radio because you came up with a word that I’ve never forgotten it’s your twitch gaming is twitch gaming. It is you know, and it’s Listen, it’s a fantastic version of it. You can it’s very rare that it requires any length of full a full time cycle right? Like I right before you and I got on here I was playing a little bit of zombies. And and I was thinking to myself, you know what kind of sucks about zombies. And a lot of other modern gaming for that matter is I needed time I need time I that’s a block of time I have to carve off. Unless I really really happened to suck it’s at least a 30 minute commitment. Even to do a bad game of Call of Duty Zombies because you have like 10 rounds where it’s, you know, grind fest do this, do that shoot them shoot bad before it actually starts to get to be a challenge where you could lose, you know, by nature of the game and not just by throwing the game. So I like games where I know that there is you know that there is a there’s an out I’ll be done with it. And pinball works really great for that. And I know you’re a huge pinball fan. I’m very envious of a lot of the videos that you’ve put out a virtual pinball. I love the fact I mean you actually had on one of your shows you had a ps veida pinball game, play I was wondering how did you capture that because it looked like a direct feed. Where are you sure you’re talking about the right guy here? I’m pretty sure there was a member. It was an oddball table doing a PS Vita. I have not used PS Vita in any of my shows. That’s just just one maybe you had mentioned it on the side that it was available in a PSV to game pack or something. Because I was looking because as soon as you as soon as you had mentioned I’m like, wait, wait, what? PSV? How’s it getting that video out like that? I thought maybe you had one of those PlayStation TVs or something to play the video games because it looked really really good. I’m always impressed by your captures, by the way. I mean, I know you’ve got you know, a far better studio than me. But even when you’re doing like off cam type captures they look really good. What’s some of the secrets to that I know lighting is one of them. But well, lighting in audio to me are some of the biggest things just to start with, you know, which you and I’ve talked about at length. But when it comes to the captures, I’ve got I’ve got a pretty good PC and I’ve got some capture hardware built in. And I have spent a lot of time trying to minimize the amount of stutter because man I’ll tell you when it comes to pinball. And you get these little micro stutters and it’s no different than when you play video games. You know, we’re always trying to solve micro stutter and you know, these this capture software it says capture 60 frames a second, you know, perfect 60 P and of course, I’m playing the pinball and even just letting Zen pinball students attract sequence where the cameras fly over the tables because I can watch very carefully and there’s little, little hiccups. And I’ve tried so hard and then you get into playing the pinball and you see the ball kind of jumping. And I’ve hit a point where I’ve I just finally I do accept it. And I appreciate your nice comments. But in To me, the perfectionist that I am. I’ve tried to make it perfect, and it’s really hard to get it perfect, but I’ve gotten pretty good. Well, I can tell you, I have a lot of experience regarding these micro stutters because of virtual reality. In my opinion, the pinball any of these super low latency gaming, you know, there’s not a lot of it, honestly, I mean, yes, like first person shooters and things like that, unless you’re playing like competitively or one of these weird, creepy freaky people. For the most part, we see drops in frame rate, and things of that nature. And we don’t it doesn’t even affect us anymore, because we’re just used to it. But we are talking about a ball stuttering or a 15 millisecond delay on your flipper. Or in the case of beat Sabre, you know, the block being off of the beat of the song by 50 milliseconds. I mean these that’s not that’s not being a perfectionist that’s just wanting to play the game the way it was intended. Right? I mean, I want to play the game as it was intended. And so one of the interesting things was so I told you I was gonna get, I’ll just gonna get interrupted in the middle of this. So with with beat Sabre, when I had an iPhone five, I had a I had a mid Gen I five, with a GTX 980 when I had my, my LG Rift, and beat Saber, of course, has always been one of my favorite things to do in VR. And what I found was, is that the PC and the quest to actually, but less on the quest, because it’s a closed ecosystem. There are so many things going on, most people don’t even know this or they do they don’t think about it. There are hundreds of tasks running on your PC, whether you’re doing anything on it or not. And I can tell you right now that one of the greatest offenders of all micro stutters, all performance degradation is the damn web browser. It’s that goddamn web browser. And I don’t care which one you have, whether you’re an edge guy, a Firefox guy, a brave guy, a chrome guy, browsers equal death. So what I ended up having to do, I’m going to be straight with you. What I had to do was in order to get good performance on that I five four beat Sabre, I would reboot my computer fresh all the way to the bottom. The second it came up disable all background tasks, whether you think that they’re important or not all antivirus or anti malware, all driver updates, tools anything that you look at your sister and you go What the hell is that? Oh, I didn’t realize that was running let’s let’s get rid of that. All of those things can introduce micro stutters especially the browser and once I started doing that, I could actually play beat Sabre without being miserable on that I five Once I went to the ice seven and had all of this overhead room and some extra you know, some extra breathing room on my resources. I don’t have to shut everything down now. But it’s it’s true. The things that did you don’t even see are causing your games to suck. And I’m sure that’s the way of pinball too. Yeah, that’s really true. You know, my advice. To anyone listening, who uses a Windows PC is go to the start menu and type startup. And just look at all the apps you’ve installed that are set to start up when windows starts. And you will probably be surprised at how many of these little things just snuck in there. And now it’s running in the background every time you start a computer. And now I always go in there right away when I get a new PC, and I just check that and I’m constantly turning this off. And this often is off. Because like you, you want things as clean as possible. And it’s frustrating that all these, the software makers are sneaking that stuff in to start up there. I’ve been asking you, you know, like this To start, it’s just there. It’s processes that, you know, that’s like you said, you’re trying to minimize the processes, to hopefully make your game run clean. And let’s be honest, it’s very rarely in the consumers best interest for this sort of this sort of thing to be running. It’s all about telemetry. It’s all about them watching what you’re up to, you know, Adobe’s guilty of this corellas guilty of this, they installed services that watch for licensing, tampering, right? So if you try to go in and hack a copy of Adobe Premiere, or you’re messing around with PaintShop Pro, or whatever they’ve got, they’ve got applications that are sitting there listening to ensure that the licensing server is reachable. It’s really, it’s not in our best interest, it’s in theirs. And that’s just another another way now listen to pirated copies don’t do that. By the way. The funny part, you know, we’re paying 1000s of dollars for software, we’re the ones getting screwed while the pirates are getting the better performing. Obviously, lower quality, lower cost version of it just makes me mental, that, you know, you do the right thing and you get screwed over. Well, it’s like an Android phone. You know, I don’t know about you, but I’m always kind of closed up my apps when I’m done. And you know, I like that. I feel like I’m kind of keeping it running clean. And but my wife, she really wanted an iPhone. And I of course, even though I’m not an apple fan, I I that’s what she wanted. So I’ve helped her with it the best I could. But on the iPhone side of things, you can’t even close apps, there is no close app, is that courageous, they’re all it is true. They are always just running. There’s no ability, like an Android where you can just minimize and say close all or just close the ones you want. Because one time I was trying to figure that out. And I realized there’s really no way unless I think there’s a brute force way. But it’s not as simple just close this up, you know, not using it. Let’s just close it up. So the resources will go to other things. And I thought that’s the apple thing, right? There is is, you know, they I think they users, maybe they don’t care about that? I don’t know I do. It’s It’s my PC behavior, Android behavior, just what we’re talking about. Yeah, you know, one thing I found out like it, I kind of knew about it, but I didn’t give it much credence when it comes to mobile device applications. So you see, you close them down, right? When you’re done with them, or, you know, you try to keep a nice clean, a clean Recent Apps menu. One thing I found out, that makes complete sense when you think about it. Is, is you know, like when when when these apps on the PC, like you’re talking about put in these, these auto start things, right? You people have to realize that notification notifications aren’t free. So if you install an app, like God forbid Facebook or some other social media app, and its whole point is to keep you in that dopamine loop of receptor nonsense where they’re constantly pinging you with crap. Hey, somebody likes your picture. Hey, don’t you feel good now that nano has to sit and run in the background, my friends. There’s a little tiny chunk of Facebook running on your phone, whether it’s open or not. That is talking back to Facebook to bring you those notifications. Do you need notifications from subway? Or from grubhub? Do you need notification? I certainly don’t. But you know what all of those apps automatically have access to sending you notifications. And that means a piece of them have to run all the time. And here’s what’s even worse, Shane is one of my friends. I was texting with him last week and we were discussing Disney World. And at the this is a text message, okay, we’re talking to texting. And at the end of the discussion, he texts me later and he says you’re not gonna believe this dude. He said, I opened my tic Tock app, and it started feeding the Disney World video content and I told him I said that is bad. That’s nothing. I don’t know how people are on my phone. No, no, no, no, no. That’s the part that actually makes me crazy. I mean, tick tock like that would be the first thing I would think nobody. I mean, that’s the one thing that all Donald Trump and I happen to agree on. Was that Tick Tock shouldn’t be in America. I mean, that’s, you really want that. I mean, I’ve joked I’ve made jokes that I would rather have the Chinese version of the quest, because I trust the Chinese with my data, more than Facebook. But that was sort of a haha thing. But I mean, that’s nuts. That’s nuts. Oh, listen, I know where I sit with Google. I understand that Google has a has a has a probe up my ass right now. And I guarantee you that some weird part of our conversation is going to show up on my Google Assistant later guaranteed. I’ve come to peace with that. But I don’t expect other apps to be cross talking with my other apps and finding out what to send me you know, that starts getting into creepy paranoid zone. I don’t know. But some people are fine with that. I don’t get that. Why are people okay with that, Mike? Why aren’t people okay, trading everything away? So that you can look at somebody else’s dinner pictures? I don’t know. I don’t know. It just depends. I, I personally think when it comes to most of us are pretty boring. You know, when it comes to being monitored. And I know in certain cases they’re looking for, you know, criminals or stuff like that, or bad activity, things you shouldn’t be doing. Most of us are boring, but I am like you I privacy is important. And when it comes to this stuff, I don’t think it’s going to get better. That’s going to get worse. Yeah, well, unless, you know, unless our government gets off their ass. I mean, they’re too busy doing other great things for us, right versus trying to protect us. You know, it was interesting, it all put into perspective. I was doing a lot of research one time about Facebook to try to counter some of the the morons I have to deal with on Reddit. And I know more on in red, it’s an oxymoron, somewhere in there. But I found out that that Facebook makes more in three days than the entire federal trade commission industry, the entire federal trade commission body, all of its budget, we’re talking salary, equipment, everything, their entire budget is overshadowed by Facebook in three days. And you wonder why we have no protection against predators in big data, when the people who are to protect us have no money to do so. Unbelievable. Yeah. I, I just don’t get it, I think. Yeah, I agree. Well, I, you know, I had a note here, I wanted to ask you about your physical media Friday show? Well, yeah. That’s really awesome. I was just wondering how you decide what movies to pick to talk about? Because I once I understand how you go about this, I might like to suggest a couple to Yeah, yeah, that’s a great question, actually. I mean, I can understand if you go back and look, I think I’ve got what four or five of them out. There’s not a really good pattern there to see like, wow, that’s sort of an oddball choice, the Wraith, why did that one come up, and then in the line of fire, blah, blah, blah. It’s, it’s funny. I’m trying to do new releases, right? So if you were to go back and look at all of these movies, they’ve come out like in the last month on whatever version that they’re in, right? So the 4k in the line of fire came out, I believe, last month, middle of last month. The rave came out last month, so I’m trying to I’m trying to drive traffic to the channel by doing something that’s new. I mean, they’re old movies, but they’re new releases. And I know that me personally, I’m a huge fan of understanding. What’s new with this version. I mean, I’ve bought Labyrinth like 18 times. I got the labyrinth super bit edition, if you can even possibly believe that it is anybody happened. who’s listening to remember super bit that was like the greatest scam ever on DVD, but I do. I’ve got I’ve got and guess what, next week, I am buying Labyrinth again, I think it’s honestly for the fifth or sixth time. I will own Labyrinth again for the 35th annual Anniversary Edition. And I’m buying it not because I’m senile, probably getting there too. But because it has a full hour more of extras that have never been released on any other home version. For me that’s worth the 22 bucks or whatever it is that it costs. But to get back to your question, it’s really more about what’s new and the movies that I might be interested in imparting to others. But there’s going to be a point in time of course where there’s not going to be anything new. I did have a I did have a dry period last week where I went back to the line of fire, which was a whole month old. But there’s some movies that I’m gonna end up bringing up but I have nothing new to talk about or some new release that they’re just like, holy crap. I cannot believe that this movie one got on blu ray at all right? I mean, this is a movie that I had resigned myself to having some bootleg streaming edition that they did some sort of nasty ass upscale off of the DVD, which still looks better than the DVD so I’ll put up with it. You see some of these releases and you’re going one First of all, how did anybody get get rights to that? Because you know, that has to be in rights held somewhere to who cares about that movie but me, so how are they gonna make any money off of this? You know, there’s a the one I’m going to do that I’ve got sort of palmed is Cynthia rothrock did of course, she’s a big martial arts and martial arts actress. For those of you who don’t know, pretty big following. She’s also a legitimate martial artist. She’s got seven different black belts, legitimate black belts, she trained in the same style that I trained in tuxedo, that was her first art. So I have a kinship with her in that respect. And I actually met her I mean, I did her website for a while too. So I have some interesting ties to Cynthia rothrock. But she did a movie called martial law. There were two of them. And one of them has the kung fu guy all the sudden his name just totally slipped by David Carradine did his website. Do you think I’d remember his name? But David Carradine is in it. It’s Listen, it’s not a great movie, but it’s still a great movie. This got a special edition blu ray release both it and it’s sequel and the sequel, nobody saw hell, I’ve only seen it once. And I’m a huge fan. But these got a deluxe beautiful version on blu ray, and I’m thinking to myself, first of all, who’s putting up the money for that? Whose was that? Like? Did somebody lose a bet? Right? I mean, there’s somebody who’s listening, listen, hey, listen, if I got aces, if I got ace high on this, this flush right, then you’re gonna have to put Cynthia rothrock Marshall lawn on blu ray. Okay. So I’m thinking to myself, how do they How are they paying for that, because I’m, I’m probably one of five people that brought a copy of it. Well, in my opinion, I think they’ve set up this pipeline process to make the process of transferring the film to the video to the blu ray, very, very cheap. And that process is called tele cinny. So you take the film reels, you put them on a machine called a telephony machine. It’s got a camera, or a scanner that scans the negative and puts it into a digital file and turns that into a video file. And I think that they’ve found a way to do this very cheap. They’re probably sending these film reels overseas. And having them done by houses that are that are super cheap, very little people involved is probably an automated process. And they might have one person, maybe check the color correction, do just a quick one pass on it. And then have somebody quality, check it make the blu ray done. And then they’re, you know, because they’re not just about the blu rays, they’re trying to come up with ways to stream it and make money off streaming. But I just think the process itself has become very cheap, because 10 to 20 years ago, tell us sending a movie was a lot more expensive. Yeah, that more people involved. It was not as fast. He couldn’t do it quite overseas the same way. You know, Shane, I was gonna tell you that. I just I watched a lot of movies with my son, Brett who’s he’s almost 15 just like your son Brian. Pretty much the same age. Yeah, I watch a lot of movies. I’m constantly shoving 80s movies out of it. He is a trooper. He will watch anything. He is a great great movie buddy. And he pays attention. P he he enjoys them he loves the ad stuff. But I just picked up there’s this Warner archive collection of all the rays and they just came out with a movie from the 80s called one crazy summer remember love that movie? Of course. I saw a kit the new release list. Absolutely. Yeah. So now Brett knows who Bobcat Goldthwait is which you know that was part of it it is so now he knows who that guy is and the blu ray there are no bonus features it’s got the it’s the typical cheap it’s got the trailer yeah it’s got a menu that’s just an image from the poster not even a motion menu which I don’t care about that but it’s just another reminder me of the low budget approach but and you know it looked good I mean it’s super grainy, but that’s as good as it’s gonna look unless you pay a lot of people to clean it up. But that’s what they’re doing it’s it’s but you know, they made the disc I just ordered they just released Pump up the volume, you know, Christian Slater? Yeah, I ordered that one. Also the Warner archive collection and the reviews were on Amazon we’re like there’s there’s no bonus features. It’s just the trailer and it’s just another sign to me that that’s they’re just doing this stuff really cheap. But what we get is a lot of these more obscure movies at least we get a slightly better looking version than the DVD. The sad part is the DVD releases of these films probably do have those bonus features that now are they’re not even porting them over. I mean, what does that say? That’s why that’s why if you go to my blu ray collection right now you will find if you shake the box, well don’t shake the box, but if you open the box, you’ll find that there’s a DVD stuck right in there with the blu ray I fact I actually order two and three disc blu ray containers to replace My existing blu rays when I have to keep the DVD as well for the supplemental material, or in some cases, believe it or not, what was the one I just had? That was a complete crazy thing where there was a 5.1 mix on the DVD, but it didn’t make it to the blu ray. Wait, what? It’s a DTS, you know, Dolby 3.0 track. It’s on the blu ray, but the original DVD had the 5.1 mix. Wow, what could that have been? Could that have been a licensing problem? Could I mean, how nice was that? I can tell you what I think it is. I’m dying to know. Remember, these DVDs were done a long time ago, like 10 to 20 years ago. Yeah, at this point, it’s hard to believe we’re getting that old. But there were companies that the studio’s contracted to make these DVDs. And their job is to turn over the final disk so the studio can sell it and distributed. But the source files, those are long gone. They’re on hard drives, whatever company made those that company’s out of business, it got dissolved, I’m sure it’s gone. And so that’s probably why they’re not porting that stuff. So now they’re they’re left with the film reels, and then whatever the audio tracks were and then you just get into how much time Are they going to spend? Do it right? Or do it cheap, you know, right. And that’s, I think cheap is winning over right and it’s tough cuz I’m still glad to see high diversions of these these movies, they still look better. But yeah, you’re you’re really smart to put those old DVDs in with your blu ray cases. I I haven’t even though I’ve done that, and I should have, I have a stack of them that are sitting there waiting for me to meticulously hand over hand each release to make sure and that’s again, one of these physical media Friday scenarios where I want people to know, you know, here’s the differential. I mean, you decide whether you can lose the French mono track, which most of us are probably okay with, but you listen, there’s some French guy out there from Canada, a that he’s not going to want. He wants that French mono track. And if the blu ray doesn’t have it, he has no French option, right? So you know, I mean, there’s a reason you might want to know these things. I certainly do. Well, and if you ever want a good laugh, just play the Muppet Movie and turn on the French dialogue. Oh, geez, I might have to go do that right now. Frog in French. That’s got to be fantastic. I assume they have a sound like I mean Frank Oz probably doesn’t speak French right? So Oh, you gotta sound like but it’s it’s French. It’s like curve. curve. It’s in French. It’s great. I try to imitate it but I would fail miserably so that’s fantastic. Yeah, I’m I’m putting that on my list. I’m gonna have to at least go see what that looks like. Yeah, I recently found out that the Smurfs collection that I acquired from the internet long time ago actually is all in Spanish. My wife was furious because she went actually wanted to sit down and watch Smurfs yesterday. And she’s like, can you come here for a minute? I’m like yeah, she goes watch this. I’m watching Smurfs and so it starts playing I’m going so far I what’s going on shows no no no no wait wait wait wait wait wait. And then all of a sudden the theme song starts up and it’s it’s not it’s not the theme song. It is the Spanish rendition of the theme song which wasn’t even close I mean it’s like listening to star blazers theme from you know American versus the Japanese original The music’s right but boy everything else just isn’t there. Yeah, that’s great. Too funny man. Yeah, I’m really interested in all of that stuff you know Warner archives I’ve been doing business with them with for a long time when I say doing business I mean buying their shit I don’t like have any professional business with them but I’ve always been a really big fan of theirs because that’s exactly what they do. They cut all the overhead of actually releasing the thing to the stores and it’s all done on demand right so I’ve talked about it here on the show like my demon lover terrible movie but what what a terrible movie it is from a from a guilty pleasure standpoint if you’ve never seen my demon lover by all means go get it or you can’t it’s not streaming anywhere either. At least I don’t think so. So the only place you can get it is to have a ready to burn copy from from Warner’s Digital Archives. I had the VHS sitting around forever because it was out of print. Never on DVD right. And you know that was sort of my first exposure to this whole make on demand thing and just like you said, it’s they cut it they took a picture of the damn poster they put that as the backdrop. There’s a trailer that looks like it hasn’t it hasn’t been touched in 30 years. They didn’t even bother to clean that up. And yeah, but you get but it still looks 10 times better than the VHS. So listen, I’ll take it. We know what I was gonna suggest to you, Shane, as you look for other content to talk about is, if you haven’t done this, just go on Amazon and do a search under Paramount presents, blu ray. I have a lot of those. I love those. Okay, good. Yeah, I’ve been getting them too. And I was gonna say they’re really well done. The quality is great. You can tell that on the Paramount presents series versus the Warner archive presents. They seem to spend more time making it look good, and a little more care involved. But I have to tell you I picked up a movie called The court jester with Danny Kaye and I I never knew a lot about Danny Kaye. I know he’s a big name for the most I heard of it was in Chevy Chase and Christmas vacations, you know, right across with Danny effing Kay. And the court jester was an awesome film my son and my wife and I watched it and I was blown away by Danny Kaye and his uh, his acting, singing and comedic timing abilities It was so I highly recommend that as maybe you might take a look at that if you haven’t seen that movie. You know I have not and I’m a huge fan by the way I’ve done I’ve done one or two of the Paramount presents because I’m a huge fan I like the the Karen detail they have a they have a theming that they do for each one I’m a huge fan I’m glad you brought that up but they’re great yeah, I’ve listened Could they be could they have more features and all that Yeah, of course. I don’t like the fact that they’re doing 4k scans and then releasing them on blu ray and not giving us the 4k versions that bothers me. But listen, I’ll take what I can get. You know what I’ll tell you though, Shane is that the older films if you’re seeing film grain you’re seeing you’re seeing it about as good as it’s gonna be and so I don’t think 4k is as important for the old old stuff when it comes to the grain I mean if you know if they clean it up and ultra you know artificially sharpen it a lot of people don’t like that but you know the bigger thing about the 4k is the is the High Dynamic Range absolutely is that’s just the blacks to the whites you get more detail now that can affect those older films so I guess I know 4k is the word we throw around but when it’s just 4k resolution that’s one thing that HDR helps but and I’m with you and I’m sure the blu ray move is just a cost thing it’s just cheaper you know that’s what I find is kind of funny is 10 years ago DVDs were cheaper. Well now blu rays are cheaper yeah and but they look really good they really do it’s really hard to complain whoever’s yeah whoever’s behind that project the Paramount presents they care they’re doing it right i mean you’ve got the word archive collection they don’t well yeah and I think literally the I think in you know I’ve I’ve had a couple of tweets back and forth with them I don’t know who it is that they got a PR company or something that they work with but they seem to be responsive and they seem to I mean it’s really easy to say don’t care because there’s no extras or anything but I mean the fact of the matter is were we ever going to see you know my demon lover on DVD if it weren’t for the fact that they were able to chip in and make this the the process is streamlined and you know the on demand I’m sure is a factor of it so I I’m the first one to bitch when something I really really like seems to get a very plain release but I’ve kind of I’ve come to kind of come to terms with just because I think it’s like one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time I’m not in good company apparently it’s not everybody wants my demon lover on blu ray like me, but hey we’re getting deadly friend and that’s all that really matters at this point. That’s my next big oh my god I can’t wait to get it. blu ray disc is deadly friend. So I got to talk to Shane about one more big project that’s coming down a remaster and I’m curious if you’re aware of this because I’ve I am aware of it and I’ve even listened to an interview with the producer is working on gonna get me all excited that they are doing a 4k Ultra remaster of Star Trek The Motion Picture. Did you know about that? I didn’t know I did. They’re doing the first four movies if I remember right. That not that’s not entirely correct. The first movies are coming out this fall on 4k Ultra HD that’s been announced. You can look at the packaging online. But a green light has been given for them to remaster the first Star Trek movie, and it will be the director’s cut. That’s interesting is what’s coming out this fall is the theatrical cut which scotch it’s been well documented that Robert Wise was never happy. The movie was rushed to the screen. And so there’s there’s some people involved. They’ve got a budget, they’ve been given a green light and they are going to do a first class remaster of that movie with all the updated you know, visual effects shots. They had to do. Because they did do this for DVD but the problem there is the visual effects were all done standard def and they need to redo it but they’re gonna do it big and I’m very excited about that i Star Trek The Motion Picture is such a love hate for so many people I for me it’s a love I love that film and I’m really excited that they’re doing this I’m hoping that so that the is the director’s cut and the Extended Cut the same thing I don’t think so the direct there’s a DVD of the director’s cut which I have and it’s it’s the one where they did the the additional effects Okay, I don’t know if I’ve seen a original movie Yeah, I saw I saw an extended version but the version is more of just additional scenes okay that they’ve added back I will take a look at the director’s cut I’m in the latter half I am I am not a fan of the motion picture probably because at the time that I saw there was probably something about it i i really it deserves for me to go back and see it again. Which is why I was thinking about doing that when I got the four K’s come this fall because you know I’ll be signing right up for that in two seconds Me too. For sure I’m really I’m really upset that Star Trek six isn’t getting the treatment I can do without five like most normal people but I have a personal affection for number six and I’m really sad that that’s not part of the set but listen as long as I get to three and four I’m excited but um there’s a director’s cut though I will most definitely give it another another try I have a great deal of respect for your your film prowess so if you feel that I missed something early on in life that I’m much I’m very very willing to go and give that another look well Star Trek The Motion Picture is a it’s a I call it a musical journey it’s very slow and it there are so many scenes where I mean they fly around the enterprise for 10 minutes and it’s all the music but you have to look at it that way that you’re enjoying this musical experience but you know nowadays people are like what the hell let’s let’s just get on the ship and go and so you have to have so much of your experience of a movie is the mind set you put your brain into in Star Trek The Motion Picture I just recently last year showed that to both my boys and I told them that before we watched it I said this movie is slow be prepared for that but you have to enjoy the music and you have to look at it that way and they both got through it they were they were troopers my oldest he definitely followed along but my youngest he he got through it and I think that’s because I gave him context before we even started but but I’m with you on Star Trek six Shane I mean how can you not love that movie when it’s got Christopher Plummer of general nice. The whole movies just great and of course you know it has that special place in my heart because I had it on on Philips mood video CD which I played on my Amiga cd 32 using the full motion video cartridge. So I’ve seen that movie more times than I care to admit because I was always taking it to a user’s group meeting or something like that saying let me show you how this brand new Amiga can actually play a full video you know full movies on it so it’s seen a lot of it’s not a lot of action so I’ve seen it a lot I love to quote movie samples and I like it when you do it on your show a lot of times you’ll just throw out a movies and I usually know what you’re talking about and I love awesome you know there’s some good fun some Star Trek six one that crosses my brain it’s not your typical but I always think of Renee I think you say ob or jaundice say he played he was the one of the Federation folks but he says I’m quite finally sir we can clean their chronometer errors. I always laugh at that remember that quote it’s not clean their clocks. He said that no there chronometer which is absolutely genius. I mean it’s a quote that has no business even being there which is what makes it funny. Yeah, yep. There’s that whole movies loaded with great quotables You know, I’m searching for like my favorite right now. Of course I use the original Klingon version a million times I mean probably once a week I probably sneak out some reference to you you can’t appreciate it until you’ve you know watched it or read it in its original cleaning Yeah Yes, absolutely. In every I get a lot of sideways looks like one person in the audience you know, the the listening audience will get it and it’s like, you know what, that’s just for them. They can appreciate that. Yeah. Yeah. And I think I think little things like that. Yeah, I think the I think the the quotes and the references, they go by better if they’re completely out of left field, and there’s no explanation given. There was one I don’t remember which Which game I did a video for. But I did one for one one of the zombie maps or something like that and it right in the middle of it I spewed some random Movie Line and I mean it was obviously germane to the moment but in the game but it really had no business at all being there and there was one guy that wrote a comment on that video that like made the entire video for him I mean, he’s like, I can’t believe one that you brought up this movie too that it was this line and three it was just out of left field and came out of nowhere subscriber for life or something like that. So that’s fun about it. My business partner norb and I being the filmmakers that we are when we get together half of our dialogue between us is just coming up with movie samples that fit whatever we’re trying to say to each other. I mean it’s it’s hilarious and we know so many and a half of it is just trying to come up with a clever one that maybe we haven’t used it’ll get the other guy to laugh that’s awesome that That to me is just some of the joy of friendship and the love of movies is just to quote those quotes with your friends because they get it and you get it it’s just a fun way to entertain each other Yeah, yeah and it’s it’s a shared it’s a shared tribal thing that I think I mean I’m going to be honest with you into and this is going to sound like the grumpy old man up on the on the soapbox Get out of my stay off my lawn Get out of my house level. But you know, there is there’s no time to appreciate dialogue there’s no time to quote dialogue or reference dialogue or to to actually immortalize anything anymore because right up to button clicks away or three other shows that you have to get in before the weekend’s over. Here’s another series here’s another this here’s another that there is no time for anything to become immortal in my opinion anymore. I mean, well, and you know what I’ll say to add to that Shane too is that I assume you know, an experience of a movie comes down to also rewatch ability how how often when you watch a movie like are you saying to yourself man, I’m gonna watch this a lot because this was awesome or Yeah, that movie was great. I don’t need to see it again. Right and I think for you and I growing up watching movies on VHS videotape and renting them at that store and we watched them over and over because we had more time and there was no internet to occupy our time and so I grew up just watching the movie theater and then waiting for come out on video and I’d watch it over and over and over and I think then those movie quotes start to get into your head to your favorites when there was water cooler thing right the the water cooler collective like like Game of Thrones and some of these other there are some epic television or experiences in the media that get that sort of thing you know where you and your you know your your your work wife or your work husband can’t wait to talk about animal kingdom on Monday when you get there. But I find that that’s that’s largely gone I mean, with a rare exceptions. Right? I like to Game of Thrones, but if you asked me to start quoting it, I would have to really think about it for Yeah, first it just doesn’t roll off the tongue likes the Star Wars films or the Indiana Jones films or Star Trek or you know others movies I like like contact Norman are constantly quote lines from contact or Braveheart. I mean, the list goes on. But it tends for me to be the slightly 80s 90s films that I just watched a lot more, but there’s plenty of ammo there. But, so when you do your quotes, you’re usually doing that, that genre. So I can add I can pretty much always get them and I appreciate them. That’s what I’m here for. Hey, you know what, we’re starting to run a little long in the tooth here. I would like to I’d like to be able to do this again in a live setting. Because you’re a wealth of movie knowledge, not just as a consumer like me, but you’re a filmmaker. So I mean, I know that my fans would love to pick your brain. Like you and I had endless discussions about the $6 million man blu ray remakes or the the blu ray remasters and you answered a lot of my questions and I was fascinated. I think my my constituents would love to be able to have an opportunity to pick your brains. What do you think you want to come back here and do a live one of these? I would be happy to be in your passenger seat anytime you’d like Shana, this is a lot of fun. A lot of fun. That’s awesome. We were gonna do 30 minutes and it’s like an hour and 10. So yeah, I figured that’s what would probably end up happening. But you know, listen, as they say on Earth, c’est la vie. Yes, sorry about your crew. You know what people can start and stop the show anytime they want right so I figure it can be modular it doesn’t have to be in our 10 minute read you can listen to five and check check back in later what will still be there I have I have amazing fans you know I don’t have a lot of them I mean I have a nice little number I have my nice little stable but I don’t have a lot of them but boy they are some devoted folks man I love them I love all you guys that are listening. You know what’s really funny about this type of forum? I stat politics i stat a religion for the most part. I mean, I maybe I did here and there but but not much. But I have so many vastly different people that can all exist in the plane of this shows existence. And we can all we can all get along. I mean, don’t get alone. But I mean, that’s kind of what I mean. I mean, it’s just like, you know, we can talk to cats living together. Mass hysteria. I mean, I love the fact that this forum can be like this that we can talk about something that doesn’t piss everybody off wanting. We started talking about how great Star Trek five is. We might piss somebody off but I don’t know what does God need with a starship may be one of the greatest lines of cinematic history to be honest, and it’s stuck in Star Trek five. Well, I will say this about Star Trek five. There was a book that came out about the making of that movie back when we read more books, and it was written by Shatner’s daughter and I loved Star Trek, and I gobbled up pretty much anything I could get my hands on. So I bought that book and I read it. And as a filmmaker, I do feel bad for William Shatner, because there were a lot more grand ideas for that movie than what made it to the screen. And that’s partially why it’s ridiculed is some of the goofy stuff, but it’s too bad. I mean, you know, they wanted Sean Connery to play to play a cyborg had grown out of there but but Sean Connery was busy doing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and there’s a little thing in Star Trek five where they talk about Shaka re it’s like it’s part of what they’re questing for well that’s really just a little little easter egg of Sean Connery that’s not supposed to be That’s awesome. How did I not know that? I mean, I feel like I’m pretty well versed in Star Trek and I did not I did not know that well and it hurt the film because they got Lawrence luck and bill to play sidewalk and and he’s a great actor, but he you know, he wasn’t that name he Connery would have would have sold that movie big time like Christopher Plummer. And Star Trek six and so much about movies is not just the movie. It’s the marketing, but I felt bad for Shatner reading about what they were trying to do what he wanted to do he just making movies is hard. And yeah, Star Trek five. It’s, it’s a tough one in the whole line of Star Trek movies. But, you know, the book was a good read at the time. All right, my friend. I’m gonna let you go. I appreciate your time, sir. It was fine. We will have you back again soon. I promise. It’s a lot of fun. Sounds great. Thanks. All right. Well, listen, everybody. Thanks so much for listening and tuning in. And I’ll let everyone know in advance when we’re going to have Mike back on and that way you can have your questions prepared, and be part of the magic that is passenger seat radio. I also have to talk to you guys about this whole deep, fake nude thing that’s going on brand new discussion about how deep fakes are going to ruin our lives. All of this and more on a future episode of passenger seat radio. This is Shane R. Monroe. Thanks always so much for watching, and take care everybody
