LIVE from my DESKTOP for the very first time.
Hello everybody, this is Shane R. Monroe and you’re in the passenger seat with me passenger seat radio. It is August 14 2021. And brand new, you hear that there’s no water running, you hear no road noise. That’s because this is the very first episode I’ve doing right from my workstation right at my desk in my office. Yes, I’ve already been in the hot tub today. And I’m going back later, and I don’t have anywhere to go. So I thought, you know what, I wonder how broadcasting off of the PC would be. And so it turns out spreaker the tool that I use to broadcast here, of course, is available as a Windows desktop application. And that’s what I’m, that’s what I’m using right now. So I thought it’d be kind of fun. We’ll do a midday on a Saturday show, and we’re going to use this, this desktop. So I’m kind of watching my levels here. I don’t have anybody in the chat yet. So I don’t know what this sounds like. I’m hoping it sounds good. I mean, I am using a lav mic and, and a lavalier mic and I am in a pretty quiet environment. So it should be pretty good. I just don’t know how the levels Look, I don’t see anything exceeding into the red over here. I’m going to turn up just a little bit and we’ll see how that goes. But hopefully we’ll have some people in the chat here pretty soon they can tell me give me an audio check. And I’ve got so much to talk about. I know I haven’t done a show in a while. And I have so many topics to talk about. But I thought it’d be kind of fun just to try something different. You know, I like to experiment in the medium. And yeah, yeah, so we’ll see how it goes. Alright, so let’s get started with the show. We have a new physical media Friday video out yesterday, this time I looked at in the line of fire the 4k edition. And this was the first 4k movie that I’ve done for that particular segment. And the first 4k and the first HDR I might add. And so one of the things I really wanted to show off was the DVD fabs 4k HDR 210 80 p SDR conversion process. And I don’t know if I’ve talked about this in great detail here on the show, but I think it’s worth talking about. Because it’s it’s really a neat way of sharing HDR type content with people who don’t have 4k. And so essentially, you know, you stick the 4k disk and you choose the movie, you select that particular profile. And what you get out at the end is a 1080 p version of the file of the movie compressed and you can set all the parameters for the compression, everything just like you could before. But you you preserve that that HDR coloring. So if you were to watch a movie that’s HDR, but you don’t have it in HDR it it sort of it looks almost over washed out with brightness and contrast. And it’s not until the HDR comes on top of it and listen, for anybody says I have no clue what I’m talking about. You’re probably right. I am not. I am not a 4k HDR master of any kind. However, I can tell you what the I can’t tell you what 4k Ultra HD HDR looks like playing back on a monitor on a 4k monitor. It looks fantastic, then I can tell you what it looks like playing it back on a 10 ADP, television. It’s not as good. It’s because there’s no HDR. So when you run the movie through this tool, it gives you that same color, but in 10 ATP, and that is absolutely fantastic. If you’re a Plex user and you you’re trying to build your 4k library, right? But nobody wants to actually stream 4k to their family and friends. Not really Right. I mean, I pay a lot for my internet. And even you know my upload is really crap. And I think most people who aren’t on fiber or something like that probably share that same fate. So you don’t really want to be pushing up a 4k movie that’s probably going to be transcoded anyway, so why not do a 1080 p quality copy. And so this physical media Friday I went ahead and did that within the line of fire. And I think it turned out really really well. And I was excited to be able to share one not only to get another physical movie physical media Friday edition out on time, because those things amazingly enough, they’re six or seven minutes apiece, but they end up taking like three or four hours worth of work sometimes more, depending on how many times I have to upload them to YouTube because of copyright hits, right so d monetization So it turns out if you want to have a video bed, in your video of say a movie, like in the line of fire, and you just want to take a two minute piece of the movie, put it in there and then put text on top of it to illustrate what you’re talking about, which in my case would be statistics about the movie, the extras, things like that, if you want to put that if you want to have that video running in the background, it turns out that the opacity of the video should be about 5%. I did 18% on my first upload, and I got a copyright hit. As soon as I moved it down to 5%, which of course, you know, listen, it’s still perfect for a video bed. But it’s not. It’s not as good of course, when it was 18%. Right? So, but it was kind of interesting to to sort of dial in and play with that and find out exactly where I can play and still be able to monetize my video, which I think is absolutely crazy. I think there should be some, I don’t know, there, there should be a better methodology of doing it. But whatever. So yeah, I was excited about that. The week before last I did the new dead zone Collector’s Edition. And for those of you because you are my my devoted listeners, I will share with you what next weeks is going to be. And I’m not sure I’m going to be able to get it out on Friday, because it’s going to be a very large release. And I want to make sure I do it justice, which is the 35th anniversary 4k release of labyrinth. Tons of extra another full hour of additional stuff that’s never ever been released. I am really excited about it. I just don’t know if I can put together a worthy physical media Friday in that short period of time because you know, it’ll come on a Tuesday, Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday evening, which gives me plus I want to I want to consume the content, right? I don’t want to just, you know, rattle off blindly what’s on the back of the box, I want to be able to tell you hey, this is the commentary, you should be listening to this. This is the extra you should be watching, you know, these are of the new features. Here’s the real winner here. These extras make the movie worth quadruple or quintuple dipping, dipping again, I swear to God, I must have five copies elaborate. Don’t ask me why I just did. So also, I got all excitable about the steam deck. I think that’s something we’ve been talking quite a bit about here on the show. And I know that it within my own peer pool, we have been also discussing this quite a bit. And we’re very excited about we’re all very excited about the prospects, right? Of what we’re what we’ll be able to do with this thing. And as time goes on, you know, pretty much you had a media event where the media had very, very controlled access to the steam deck that curated what you were allowed to play what you were allowed to see what you were allowed to do. And as times moving on, and they’re becoming more and more confident with the product, they’re starting to let people see more and do more. And so we’re getting this real thin trickle of information. Unfortunately, because of the popularity of the device, anybody who’s anybody that works with tech, or works in video games or anywhere, they are blowing up your news feeds and your YouTube recommendations with yet another steam deck video. So I decided to do something a little bit different, rather than just conjecture on how it might run or one of these other, these other facets that people are latching on to, I decided instead to go and find some interesting bits of info that aren’t necessarily front and center in the news. And so I did essentially, you know, a 10 things you need to know about the steam deck. And oddly enough, that became a very popular video popular enough that I ended up doing another one once I was able to come up with 10 more things that people need to know. And I think it’s working out pretty good. And it also it’s kind of keeping me straight on the machine too. Because it’s really easy to get sucked into the hype, right? I mean, there’s, Well listen, it’s exciting, right? It’s new tag, it’s something kind of new. I mean, listen, handheld PCs are nothing new. But something that’s got an industry backing like that it’s got the right price tag that really has a chance to be a mass mass market item, something you might be able to go to Walmart and buy, right. So there’s definitely an air of excitement and there’s an air of you want to get behind it. You want to be part of this movement, but at the same time, it’s like you don’t want to get too caught up in it where you can’t be objective. I don’t want to be the guy that’s essentially doing confirmation bias for a $500 handheld. When I get it and having to, you know, turn back on some of the things that I’ve talked about or posted or did videos on and say yeah, yeah, it turned out to be a complete crap fest. So I’m trying to keep myself very grounded with the device. And one of the cool things about doing when you do videos like this, and you do good research Lots of research helps you keep grounded so I’m kind of excited to be able to maybe be the the grounded guy of the of the steam deck revolution if you will. Alright, so let me see here let me get my list up here those I knew those off the top of my head All right, so um See you See if I can get some of my friends to come in I’m worried that maybe the mics too hot or, or I’m not giving quality audio here and no one’s around to tell me. So the next thing I wanted to talk about is so Facebook is added again. So remember, we talked a couple episodes back that Facebook was looking to sell a smartwatch that has cameras on it, because that’s what you really want is Facebook. Having access to everywhere you are from video as well. I don’t even I don’t I don’t know who’s who’s thinking that’s a good idea. I just don’t. And then they’ve got another one called like Facebook portal where they want you to put a camera on top of your TV. So your older elder relatives can hook up and, and and do a TV show. Listen, what are people thinking? I mean, I don’t get it are people so laksa Daisy, about their privacy and their security and their information that this is the sort of thing that I don’t know. I’m at a loss to be honest. So Facebook’s next thing that’s now making the rounds is for VR, of course, which again, I think I’ve been very playing I would rather see VR tailspin and died than to have Facebook and chargement. But now they’re talking about because eyes are so expressive and communicative. Right? That’s this is what they’re going with as a social medium, eyeballs, and your eyes and the way you look and how you look. And where you look are so important that you need to be able to let Facebook record, put a camera on your eyes, and replicate your eyes onto screens that are sitting outside of your visor. or outside of your internal visor. Does that make sense? So if you’re in VR, your eyes are going to be read by cameras that you let Facebook in your home, and then project those eyeballs onto your avatar so that inside VR people can see you looking around. I don’t know that sounds to me. Hey, now Alex is here. I’ll be honest, to me, that sounds like the absolute worst possible thing ever. And you know why? Well, other than its Facebook and other than the fact that you know, it’s more biometric data. That’s like your retinas, dude, if they put any sort of even remark remotely decent camera, onto that system, they’re going to be able to take a picture of your eyeball, your retina scan, right the thing. All these things are supposed to be protecting, we’ve been brought up, protect your fingerprints, protect your contacts, protect your passwords, protect your, your biometric data, protect your face, blah, blah, blah. And yet, every single time I turn around Facebook wants to collect more of it. I just, I do not understand what people are willing to give up for nonsense. And that’s really what it is. This is nonsense. This isn’t curing cancer. Listen, if you told me if I gave Facebook pictures of my eyeballs, I could cure cancer. I’d be there in two seconds. But to play VR chat with somebody so they can see my eyes. No, not gonna happen. Hey, Alex, you’re live with me here. How’s that? How’s the audio? I mean, it should sound pretty good. I’m just curious about the levels. How it’s coming through. Hello, mother. Am I coming in clear? I don’t know there’s a 15 second delay on the phone. I don’t know if the how the desktop app works for that. We’ll see. We’ll see what he says. Maybe he’s writing it in Discord. Now. Alright, well, we’ll see how it goes. Alright, so yeah, I don’t get it. I do not understand what people and how much people Oh good. It sounds great. Good. I don’t understand how people are willing to give up everything for $300 VR headset. I don’t see how people are willing to upload their contact list. Because Facebook tells them they should because Facebook is better with friends. I don’t get it. I added people people just love not to know to you know, I had this discussion with my parents. I had this big discussion the last time it was in person with them. Trying to help them understand. Even my grandma was like, What the hell? You know, my grandma was there and she was like, What the hell? Is it? Yeah. Do you want Do you want a company? Who’s selling ads to you? Do you want them knowing that about you? You want them to know every one of your dirty little secrets because they do. They know everything about you. They know more about you than anybody in this room. You know, my mother and my grandmother were very close and I looked at my grandmother and I said that Facebook knows more about you than my mother does than your daughter does about you. That’s true. So I don’t get it. I got a Facebook bashing So I was tuned into a channel on YouTube, a little wheel to YouTube, you know, you look at your recommendations and most of the time they’re okay. Fortunately, I get nothing political in mind. So my, my, my YouTube, political leanings are clean. I don’t get any sort of weird videos about, you know, vaccine anti vaccine or anything. Everything is good. Yeah, young people don’t understand there was a time when companies we dealt with didn’t know everything about you. And you know, it’s I guess it’s one thing, if you’re offering, I mean, like about you, listen, if you want to give away the keys to your kingdom, that’s on you, I guess. But I don’t think people are willing to understand how much they’re giving up. They don’t think it’s important. I know people right now that are fine using Facebook on a quest because I don’t use Facebook, I just use Facebook for the quest. And I’m like, you have no idea. You really don’t know you don’t know that by entering their ecosystem, you are tying shadow profile data 10s of 1000s of data points that are being collected on you 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from your phone from your browser, and you didn’t step foot one time on Facebook soil, they are still gathering your data. You know, if you want to be smug and say, well, they’re not making any money on meetings. I’m not looking at any ads. Who cares? I mean, ads can be blocked, dude, they’ve got your data. They’ve got your personality, they’ve got your profile. They know everything about you. They know more about you than you do. scary stuff to me, man. You know, I don’t I don’t get it. Okay, so back to this wheel of YouTube thing. I ran across this guy’s channel called Bob agar. ag er, this guy, I believe I don’t know much about his history. I’ve only watched a few of his videos, but I don’t I mean, the guy’s been around a while. Apparently, he’s an amateur or semi professional, filmmaker, independent filmmaker. So the guy’s got some sort of credentials. But he does a lot of very interesting breakdown of movies that I love. Right? So this guy’s done some really complex breakdown of the shining the thing you know, pick one of these, these really prolific movies from the past, and this guy’s probably talked about it. But he’s very Matter of fact, he’s doesn’t jump into the sensationalism stuff. He’s really, he really is into getting to the bottom of these things, right. So one of them was, so one of them, I watched him course, he has a bunch of them on the shining, he just can’t put enough shining movies, videos out. But the stuff is really, really good. Now, I’m going to warn you upfront, that initially, the guy’s going to look like a douchebag. Because of all of these disclaimers, he puts in all these big copyrights he puts on his videos. It’s just one of those things where it looks very, very pretentious. And the guy kind of looks like a douchebag and you go I can’t watch this. This guy’s a douchebag. But listen, I implore you. The reason he does this, at least from what I understand that doesn’t mean the guy’s not a douchebag even if his videos are interesting, doesn’t he’s not a douchebag. I’m saying that. The reason that apparently he puts all of these crazy disclaimers and everything on is because he’s been plagiarized more than once and listen, every everything’s kind of derivative now, right? If you were to if I were to do a video saying this shiny is about you know, jack Torrance, being a pedophile and being an incestuous dad with his son, listen, everybody’s talking about that. But I mean, in this case, I went ahead and watched one of his videos where he was talking about this the the plagiarize ation that occurred for this guy. And it was like, wow, I mean, that’s that’s ballsy to like, lift word for word line for line. And listen, I’m Listen, I borrow, right? I mean, I’ve borrowed videos, I borrowed ideas and concepts from others, but I usually at least not in done it unintentionally, I credit them. Listen, it doesn’t take much to basically say, you know, listen, I was listening to this Bob agar guy talking about the shining. And this and this, let me tell you what I think about that. You know, Rob said this, I believe that you bring the content into perspective, right? You bring the credit in with your discussion. This isn’t rocket science, but for some reason people would rather steal than come up with anything of their own. And even if you do borrow, it’s very easy. To a credit it’s very easy to to give somebody else something too, you know, I don’t mind. I mean, listen, I it bothers me what I was I’ve had my word plagiarized. But, but I’ve been usually I’m given credit. Normally somebody says yes. You know, I was listening Shayne Armen rows, passenger seat radio or retro gaming radio, he’s talking about this, he had some interesting ideas, and then they go off and they talk about it, and then they will present ideas that are sort of mixed with their own. Right, it sounds like is their ideas, but really inevitably It was a lot of my ideas, right, but that’s okay. At least I got I was accredited at the beginning, you know, at least he said, you know, listen, this guy, this guy’s on to something and let me let me share my side of the equation. So forget the idea that the guy looks like a douchebag very interesting stuff, right? I’ll give you an example of a couple of things that you’re probably already on YouTube right now as you’re listening, looking this guy up. And that’s cool. You’re probably finding tons and tons of things to watch. But in case you’re driving or whatever, you’re not in front of the computer, you don’t want to look it up. So like one of them had to do with the thing, which is a fantastic john Carpenter’s movie, the thing unbelievable movie, they were, you know, he did a whole breakdown of who got to the blood. Right? Because inside the movie, right, everyone’s starting to be assimilated by this creature. And in the refrigerator, there’s a slot refrigerator where some beast got to the one of the somebody got to the blood. And inside the movie, you know, they don’t really tell you there’s a lot of inferences inside of the thing. It’s like who got to the blood, you never really find out. I mean, by the time that you get to the point where you think that they’re going to tell you they’ve moved on and it’s like, well, wait a minute, who the hell got to the blood? It really doesn’t matter. And in in the scope of the movie, it doesn’t matter who got to the blood. But you’re sitting there thinking, Hey, wait a minute, you know, he’s right. I don’t I don’t know who actually got to the blood. And so he breaks us down. It takes like, you know, half hour and it’s not like, it’s not like he’s speculating, you know, he will take clips of the film. And it’ll say, I mean, there’s in one case, you know, because there’s keys there’s keys to this refrigerator and the guy that owns the keys should be the only one that he gets to the fridge, right? Well, there’s two or three different times that the keys changed hands during the movie and it just seems like it’s In general context of the film. But when you start watching this breakdown of him showing okay the keys were here then the keys were here. How did the keys get from here to here? Here’s one possibilities. Another possibility. It was it’s just fascinating breakdown. And he does the same sort of thing with the shining, right? We’ve, you know, how does jack Torrance get out of the locked? storage? Right? That you could right now you could go up on YouTube right now and probably find 100 or more videos, trying to explain or, or theorizing how jack Torrance gets out of the storage. I’ve seen a dozen of these things. I am so sucked into the whole Stanley Kubrick the shining, breakdown I love room 237 it’s all good stuff to me. And I love the fact that this movie from what 1980 to 1980 right 1979 1980 I love the fact that all this time later 40 freaking years later, we are still talking about it we’re still trying to decipher it we’re still trying to uncover layer after layer of this incredible movie you know, and it’s one that Stephen King the guy whose story it was based off of hey it’s it’s just it’s listen that alone the whole King Kubrick nonsense all in its own is just fantastic. I love it. It’s fantastic. So anyway, Bob agar ag er, I can’t remember the name of his channel. His channel is not called Bob agar. guarantee if you search for that, you’ll find it. You know what, I keep forgetting I’m sitting in front of the PC right now. Oh, I can actually look this stuff up on my own. Let me see if I can give this channel a proper plug. It is called I guess he does have an under his name. I thought oh, collective learning. collective learning is his main channel. Yes, yes. Yes. collective learning. Check it out good stuff in here. He’s got stuff on alien stuff on vertigo. subliminal foreshadowing an alien. Oh, one of the things that really wanted me to bring this up is he did a he did an hour long video an hour long video on 26 reasons why post millennial movies are awful. And I’m gonna listen, this guy and I can be frickin Blood Brothers, because there’s a lot of stuff in here. I assure you. I posted it in the chat. I assure you I mean, he’s not wrong. I mean, whether or not whether or not you’re okay with what he with what the items that he’s talking about. If you’re okay with those, and you can ignore it or you know, it suits you doesn’t mean that they’re not true, right. So it’s really interesting. I watched the whole thing front to back. He has another one called postmillennial movies that are actually worth watching and i have not watched that one yet. That’s an hour and 10 minutes. I gotta, I gotta be able to lock myself down for a period of time. That’s gonna be I got to give that some dedication There, but it’s really, really, really good stuff. And again, I’m telling you, the guy’s very, very analytical. He doesn’t, he doesn’t do the sensationalism thing. He doesn’t like limited to seven minutes or try to squeeze it into a period of time. It’s really good. Really good stuff, I think I think my listeners would truly appreciate it. So a lot of a lot of attention for a public beta release of the game called back for blood, which is apparently supposed to be a sort of spiritual successor of left for dead. And listen, I love me a good cooperative zombie killing game, I really do and I had to get on it right away. So there’s a lot of there’s a lot of i’s and T’s that are dotted and crossed with this game. That bothered the crap out of me. And so I will not be participating. But I did I played through I played through, you know, the tutorial I’ve played through a handful of games. So it’s not like I just wrote it off from the description, right? But here’s my problem. Here’s my problem with these games. First off, there’s a whole slew of genre of games of games in the genre, where it’s, you must have four players all the time, I don’t understand why game developers feel the urge to require a four player team all the time. Let me let me reverse that for a second. I do understand, it means you don’t have to level the game, or alter the game for anything, but that set number of characters, right? So if you were to make a game level, or a game algorithm, or an enemy generating algorithm or anything of that nature, and you were, you know, you you were fine tuning it in terms of balancing of firepower and participation, all that good stuff, right? It’s a lot easier to make it for a fixed number of people than it is to make it for 123 or four players. And one of the, the nasty things about these types of games is you if you don’t have four players of your own brood, right, unless you have three other of your friends to play with you which which frankly, rarely happens. I can get one other person in my in my, my peer group to play games pretty much anytime I can pick somebody, my son will play Alex here we’ll play Chris will play Javier play, I can almost always get one more person. Two people pretty regular, but not all that often. Three other people other than myself rare. So that means guaranteed randos and I hate randos I do not like playing with randos I just don’t. So these sorts of four player required games you’re either required to play with you either have to get a group of your own people together. Or you’ve got to play with randos or god forbid even worse you have to play with bots. Honestly, you know what I’d almost rather play with bots than randos because bots at least are somewhat predictable randos you just don’t know what you’re going to get you just don’t it’s like a box of chocolates Yeah, it’s it’s not a good thing. So plus the whole game feels it’s very difficult to explain how the game feels listen it’s it’s free it’s free you don’t have to pay for it. So if it sounds interesting if you love some left for dead then I would I would check it out if you’re into you know yet another Co Op zombie shooting game right i mean we got we got a lot of them we got a lot we got a lot so but if it sounds like it’s something up your alley, I would check it out but just understand I mean there’s things there’s things like there’s sort of like alternate currencies in there there’s just not enough interesting stuff to make it worth my time to continue to pursue so I wanted to let you know I did take a look at that because you guys are counting on me you know to look at some of this new stuff. Speaking of games, I also picked up tribes of mid guard tribes of mid guard which is sort of a combination survival slash tower defense game. And on paper this looks pretty good so I figured I would take a look at it. It was on Amazon sales like it’s normally like, I don’t know like 18 bucks or something. It was on sale for 14 you know, listening for the price of two cups of coffee you can help a starving child play tribes of mid garden. So I grabbed it and I took took it out for a run. And so it’s one of those day night things right so all day long you get to prepare for the onslaught at night, right? None of this should sound new to you because it’s all sort of common stuff. So you start off destitute, every single game there’s nothing that carries forward not that I can see anyway. You start off destitute. You have no arm You got no weapons, you’ve got no resources. And you have to spend the first day, which is how I don’t remember five to 10 minutes maybe of game time, preparing your defenses. And so you have to run out. So it’s a huge map and you have to run out. It’s all procedurally generated maps, so you won’t get the same map twice, I believe. So you run out, you gather stuff, you got to bring it back to the townspeople molded into something else, make weapons out of it, make armor out of it, right. And then nighttime comes and the town is assaulted by bad guys. And the townspeople will help unless they get killed, right. And so you want to keep your townspeople safe while you’re protecting this big giant tree. Like the tree of life in the middle of your map, right? So you’ve got to, if you happen to be out and about scouring, looking for stuff, then you might not be able to make it back and you’re townspeople be slaughtered, the tree will be killed and the game is over. And each night of course, the on slide gets worse and worse. There’s more of them, they’re stronger, they’re harder to kill, there’s more monsters. Meanwhile, outside in the land around your town, during the daytime, you run around gathering your stuff you’ll also run across smaller enemies, right? There’s little enemy encampments, you got to kill them. They have treasure chests inside their little camp that you can raid that will give you materials and stuff like that, that you need to to build your stuff. So you’ve got there’s quite a bit of stuff to build. I mean, forget a game of this nature. There’s a lot of armor, there’s a lot of weapons, weapon types, melee weapons, ranged weapons, healing selves. You know, there’s there’s tons and tons and tons and tons and tons of stuff to work your way up and you have to unlock levels right so you have to upgrade your townspeople they all start as level one. And as the game goes on, you upgrade your your blacksmith to level two. And now suddenly, you have tier two things you can buy, or make or, you know, have them make for you. So a better sword, a better bow and arrow, a better piece of armor. And so that progressively goes and you play until you’re dead or till the trees down, I should say. Yeah, so so that’s the that’s the overall that’s the overall idea of the game. And it’s not it’s not a bad game, to be sure. But it’s just one of those things that it’s like, I feel like I’ve done this before. I don’t I don’t like the pressure of I don’t like the pressure of being on a time limit to prepare. I know that that’s part of the bit, right. I know it’s part of the scenario, right? I mean, the idea is how fast can you harvest, you know, optimizing your harvesting and I get it, it just didn’t turn out to be for me. So but again, it was one of those things that it’s like Hey, listen, you know, I wanted to share with you that I definitely took a look at it. Let me jump around here. I talked about video games for a while. I watched a documentary that was recommended to me by my friend Javier. And it’s called Woodstock. 99 peace, love and rage. Now for some of you who have been around some of you who’ve been around you know there was there was an attempt to bring the concept of Woodstock back a couple of different times. So the original Woodstock set back in the 60s peace and love peace and love, lots of drugs, lots of sex, lots of music, it was like a three day orgy blah blah blah you’ve all heard the stories some of you might have even lived through it. I was born in 69 so I did not live through it nor do I know anybody personally who was there but I do know that the concept of the concept of of Woodstock has been attempted at least a couple of times and I believe the latest one was in 1999 and so this documentary was taking a look at the event as it was sort of put together by the promoters and by the people who are looking to make it and then what took place you know what the event was like and then all of the really nasty terrible things that were actually happening during the event you know there was there was there was drugs going on there were raped there was raping going on I mean it’s like look you look at this you the culture at the time you know they brought you know they brought in a listen I’m listen I am I am an eclectic guy when it comes to music but they brought in groups that their their thing is anarchie right i mean their their thing is, is to you know let’s go break stuff, right? Hey, yeah, let’s go break something. I mean, this is this was you know, this was the 90s everybody was all pissed off about something and I’m not sure anybody actually had anything to be pissed off about but Seemed like everybody was pissed off in the 90s. And they actually talked about that it was interesting. Um, I think it was, Hey, now Chad’s here, he’s a big fan of the show. He’s been begging me for a PSR you can thank him actually for this PSR because Chad has asked two or three times I think over the week saying, We need a new PSR and so you can thank him for nudging me into getting the show done. And chat I know you just got here this is being I’m live at my desk right now. I’m not even in the hot tub. I’m using my PC, using the windows spreaker application. I thought that’d be fun, too, to try something new, so we’re trying something new, and we’re getting a showdown at the same time. How cool is that? So anyway, so Woodstock. 99 peace, love and rage. I was I found it interesting. It was it’s funny because they they have the promoters in there, they have victims. You know, sexual harassment victims are people. One guy one, one guy, he and his friends had gone there, they weren’t drinking, they weren’t whoring, they weren’t being any problem, but one of their friends ended up dead. Right? At the end by the end of this concert, sir, the end of the Woodstock event. It was Listen, it’s really interesting. Even if you’re not, even if you’re not into Woodstock, per se, it’s an interesting piece. And you know, they get so they had, they had, like, they had a couple of artists that were there that they were interviewing, I think Sheryl Crow was there, they had jewel there. And it was kind of interesting, you know, jewel kind of hit it on the head. That I thought so anyway, because I lived through the 90s I mean, I was an adult in the 90s. So that wasn’t my formidable years, of course, I’ve been in the military, the first half of the 90s. And then I had been, you know, fresh out of the military for the second half of the 90s. And, and Joel said, you know, we had a lot of, you can take this as, as, you know, anti anti white male or whatever. But, you know, Joel said, we had a lot of, of white angry young males in the 90s. And, you know, at Woodstock, you know, in that era, I mean, most of the time in these sorts of situations where the people are angry. There’s some big catalyst, right? There’s a world war or a Vietnam War, or there’s, there’s some reason that people really need to be upset and best off and it’s like, let’s go look at the 90s for a minute. What are we what are we uptight about again? Right? It was kind of interesting. It was kind of right, though. I mean, I could see people being mad now. Right? And 2020s 2010s maybe not so much the 2000s it’s certainly not the 90s you know, in the 80s we were coming off of the Cold War stuff I could understand people being upset about that the 70s you know, a 60s Yeah, I got I got but I don’t know 90s didn’t seem to be a decade of of great suffering and sacrifice. But what do I know? Interesting, though. This is a Woodstock 99 peace, love and rage, peace and love, peace and love. Let’s see. What do I want to go to next? Well, let’s let’s stay on the topic of documentaries. I saw another one. Well, it’s in progress. I’m watching it in chunks. Because it’s it’s not enough to to keep my interest for a long period of time, but I keep going back to it because I’m interested in it. It’s called my Amityville Horror, and it focuses on one of the Lutz’s kids who’s still alive Of course. And this is his story. This is his tale. His life has basically been in the shithole from the day they moved into that house, right. And I’m not saying that, you know, Amityville is responsible for his stuff. I’m just saying that it’s interesting. He is he’ll tell stories about having been in the house. He was old enough to remember all of that he had a really abusive dad, which was sort of looked at in Amityville, too with Bert Young’s character, but I thought it was um it’s interesting to hear this guy basically say he’s glad his dad’s dead because he was a prick blah blah blah it was just it’s it’s interesting to see how something that apparently was fake right I mean, that’s pretty much where we’ve landed right? We know the defazio guy killed his family in the house so that was real I mean, we’ve got we got pictures of that. But you know the whole love story that got turned into the Amityville Horror they got turned into many many movies you know pretty much it’s been discredited as a complete hoax but yet this guy whether or not he somehow got brainwashed the the guy was dealing in black magic or whatever is something this kids this kids. This guy, I mean, he’s not a kid anymore, but this dude’s pretty fucked up right? This guy’s pretty fucked up. And whether or not it’s because there were actually ghosts tormenting him in the Amityville house, or whether he’s just a mental case. Either way, it’s interesting, right? So but it’s not interesting enough to sit down and take it in one setting. So I’m, I’m sucking it down in pieces as I go, but everything I watch it I get kind of caught into it again I realized why I’m still watching it. So, my Amityville Horror it’s kind of interesting if you’re into the Amityville IP as it were, let’s see here. So you know I’ve been exposing my son to more and more movies as he gets older the door sort of unlocks the things that he can see as he’s, as he’s getting older, you know, things of, you know, sexual scenarios, things like that on movies and television, you know, we kind of sheltered him from but you know, the, you know, the the restraints are lifting. And so it opens us up to being able to see a couple of, you know, a couple of more movies from my formative years right? I mean, that’s when I the video revolution was in full swing when I was in my teens right? I mean, that was when it was you know, that’s when I was out on the weekends renting you know, 10 cent movies and a stack from Liberty video in downtown Wenatchee. You know, anything that the box looked good, let’s take it home. So we, what did we, what were we What did we watch the other day? We saw Beavis and Butthead Do America, which is absolutely fantastic. You know, it’s funny, you know, they tried to bring that show back in the early 2000s. And it kind of it kind of puttered, and I’m not sure I mean, I watched it I saw the episodes I’ve gotten it’s like, but there was something as part of the magic was sort of kind of lost and I don’t know if it’s because I’m older or because they shifted from music videos to to, you know, unscripted reality shows as their medium of making fun of i don’t i don’t know what happened, but it it kind of fizzled out. I mean, I know they’re going to try again, because it’s a property that made a ton of money. But, you know, I was watching that I was like, for, for those of you don’t remember, Beavis and Butthead were like 15 minute episodes, that’s including commercials, and making fun of music videos, or talking about how much they rule, right? So the formula, the pattern of the show, was, you have a you have a little opening for a story, then they’re back watching music videos. And then there’s a commercial. And then they’re back to the story for like two seconds. Then they’re back to watching videos, another commercial, and then they’re tidying up the story. I mean, that all took place in like 15 minutes. So you’re thinking yourself, How in the hell do you pull off essentially seven minutes or six minutes of story? How do you extrapolate what has to be a terrible movie? I mean, how do you take seven minutes and turn into a movie right? But you know, Beavis and Butthead Do America is actually like a remarkably decent movie I mean, outside of the fact that it’s Beavis and Butthead right it’s just it’s it’s well it’s a well done movie you know and it’s got you know Bruce Willis and Demi Moore voices in there they got the guy from America’s Most Wanted to do you know, a voice in there which is fantastic. And I don’t know it’s just it’s one of those things where it’s like wow, that’s um Oh, Chad says I showed my daughter an episode and she said humor not contemporary and to mean spirited. Well, it’s kind of a guy thing, right? I don’t think I don’t think it’s a lot of female Beavis and Butthead fans in general. I’m not sure it resonates right. But it’s, you know, there’s it depends on what episode you showed, too, right? I mean, like, my wife absolutely loves the nosebleed episode. So there was a period of time you know, we were together in the 90s that we would watch that over and over again, and we would be dying and we would be busting up laughing constantly watching that episode. It still makes her laugh, even though she doesn’t really like Beavis and Butthead. She loves that episode, right? So it’s there you know, there are um, I guess there are selective episodes that work out. And you know, going back I ended up picking up that big collection. I think I talked about it here on the on the on the show, I picked up a huge collection. It’s like it’s some sort of a definitive collection, where they’ve rebuilt all the episodes to include the music videos. They’ve got dozens and dozens of TV spots, interviews. I mean, it’s literally the ultimate Beavis and Butthead collection, top to bottom. Everything on the planet you could possibly want to Beavis and Butthead has been painstakingly restored. And so I was taking my son through it in and it was a lot funnier in the 90s honestly, but it there are exactly as I’m saying. There are episodes that worked out very, very well and there’s some that don’t, but the movie you know the movie is is given. It’s a real movie, right? I mean, they’ve given it the proper, they’ve given it a proper plot. They’ve given the proper character development they’ve given it, they’ve given it everything that you know it needs to have. So I thought it was kind of interesting to to revisit The property later as you know as an older person myself and then to bring my son into the fold where you know that his 14 year old humor right would should work out really well for him but that was kind of interesting and while he was visiting my folks they watched doctor sleep and in speaking about it with a couple of friends of mine and then talking to him they sat down to watch it I popped it on again Oh, it was Chad actually I think that was that had sort of I think Chad you had sort of a lukewarm feeling about it when you first saw it I think and then you showed it to a friend of yours and the second watching I think you said you enjoyed it more and I think so for me personally, I went in with a very critical eye because to me as we talked about earlier in this episode, The Shining is a rather important piece to me. And it you know, impacted my psyche at an early age right i think i told you my parents went to the theater to see it and drag me with them. And so I would have been what nine something like that it was just a complete mess. I do the only thing I remember about that other than the fact that I get a feeling of dread every time I hear the music to that I remember my parent my mother recovering my eyes when the naked chick got out of the tub. I remember like what’s going on? Why am I not being able to see this? And I know now of course. But so anyway, so doctor sleep to me was like, do you guys better get this right? You know? You You better you better get it right? Because there’s a lot hanging on this and so they tried to if you haven’t seen Dr. Sleep, I recommend it. You don’t need to see the director’s cut. You can just watch the theatrical one, the director’s cuts fine. If you find you like it the first time you may revisit it again with a director’s cut. There’s Oh, excuse me. Hmm. There’s more dialogue in there. There’s a couple little a little bit of a backstory. But there’s a lot of things that were left out from the book, which I was kind of hoping that the director’s cut would kind of get into it the true nod and all that other stuff. But in reality, it didn’t. It was just more exposition I think more than anything else. Oh, you’re reading the book and he says that makes me enjoy the film even better. Yeah, I mean, listen, it’s it’s really good in terms of, of the book to movie translation, of course, the end of it’s different because they, the director decided that they wanted to honor King’s original ending of the shining book, which was not explored inside of the shining Stanley Kubrick movie, and bring that back into so doctor sleep is really a mixture of the doctor sleep book, along with the shining book, fashion in a way that is respectful to fans of the property. While still respecting the author’s both authors of the property. They didn’t try to pretend that the Kubrick shining never existed. they handled it as best that they could given the delicate nature of the of the front of the franchise, right? I mean, honestly, the shining is a is a huge, I mean, it’s a big thing should be in the Smithsonian, or whatever the Smithsonian equivalent is for film, right? So making a sequel where you don’t piss anybody off. But that’s pretty impressive, honestly. So I watched it again. And there’s been a handful of movies that are better each time that I watched them. I think I’ve talked about Vegas vacation was one hollow man. The more you watch them, you know, the first time you watch this thing, I was alright. It was pretty good. And I say, then you watch them again. It’s like wait a minute, I don’t remember quite being this good. And then the US keep doing and doing that. And pretty soon it’s like it’s like Holloman is like one of the greatest greatest movies ever, although I had a very lukewarm reception to it when it first came out. But I thought I thought doctor sleep was really good. I thought I thought they did a respectful job of it. And they they they toed the line. But you know, the one thing I couldn’t figure out I think I was talking about to Alex who’s actually I don’t know if you saw on the chat or not, but we were talking about the painstaking recreation of the Overlook Hotel in Doctor sleep. They I mean, they they worked hard. I mean they you can tell that somebody did their homework. I mean, every detail is great. And you can go on YouTube right now and see a doctor sleep versus the shining, like side by side. And they reshot all the common scenes that they show flashbacks of using the new actors kind of bothered me a little bit, but I understand why they did it. You know, so Danny writing his big wheel in the overlook stopping it the room 237 the they reshot that using the the the the new kid that’s playing Danny, they reshot Nicholson busting through the door and they reshot the show. devall peace with the with the woman who did who did as tar ads and that she did a really good job. I mean, she kind of looks like Shelley Duvall. So anyway, enough of that nonsense. I’m waiting patiently for them to to deep fake over doctor sleep. So I want to see them D age and deep fakes Shelley Duvall, scatman Crothers and of course, jack nicholson, because those are the characters that need to be, oh, Danny Torrance for that matter, texture, young Danny, for sure. All of those need to be deep fake, and we need a deep fake cut of Doctor sleep. And I would be very, very pleased. That would actually make me very, very happy if they did that. So I am not a fan of streaming services I’ve made I’ve not I haven’t made that clear already, then everybody should should know I am. I am not a fan of virtual ownership at all. I don’t like the idea that what you buy is not what you own. And so I’m not a particular fan of things like Netflix, or Disney plus anything where it’s rent to never own, which is kind of what my new monitors rent to never own. And so yeah, so as such, I have a subscription to youtube music. I do not, I did not purchase a subscription to youtube music, it came as part of my bundle with YouTube premium. So I, I would not subscribe to youtube music or to Google music or Google Play Music at the time. If it hadn’t been part of another package. Unless, of course, you can rip down stuff, right? I mean, we’ve talked about that. So Spotify, of course, is pretty much the ipso de facto of music streaming. And I know I know personally, many, many people who are subscribers, many people, and even people who are not fans of streaming services are using Spotify. So inside of my wheel of YouTube, I was treated to a video something about the dark side of Spotify. And I forgot since I’m actually sitting in front of my computer, I can actually find that for you and paste it. Let me see here. It’s actually called the dark side of Spotify. So let me copy this link address. I’ll pop that in the chat. Sorry, my timestamps on there from where I left off last. But it’s an interesting look at how terrible that services a terrible service for everybody involved. It’s so I’m looking at it and I’m, you know, I’m going through the I’m going through all of these things where it’s just you’ll just have to watch the video for yourself. It’s very disturbing to see how artists are cheated out of earnings. Because this is the only way people are going to pay for it. You know, people are buying albums, they’re not buying CDs. They’re buying vinyl because vinyl both but you know, these people have to tour to make any money. I mean, how different is it right the record companies have always been screwing them over. But now it’s an extra screw over. And it’s interesting how how Spotify as earnings can be so easily manipulated. It’s it’s fascinating stuff. And hopefully by the time you’re done listening, you’re canceling your Spotify subscription because it’s absolute shit. And I feel bad. I mean, I could not even imagine trying to be an artist now that did not have a back catalogue of 20 years. Of course, if you did, you’re probably like Stevie Nicks and you sold it all. Because why not. But if you don’t have the ability to command an audience to purchase music, even digitally speaking if you would go by mp3 or or you know, go buy a CD or whatever if you don’t if you can’t command that, and you are not out touring 300 days a year. I feel bad I feel bad for musicians in general, that this was this, you know, to me Spotify in all of the ilk, right? Pretty much streaming services in general are the result of the inevitability where it’s like if you don’t accept this, we’re just gonna let the pirates run rampant you’re not going to get paid shit, right so you can either get pennies on the dollar from Spotify, or you can just let shit like Napster or you know, let the internet run rampant. You know, getting rid of all you know, basically trading and pirating all your shit. So either Shut the hell up and accept our shitty Terms of Service, or you can get nothing. You know, I feel like I feel like streaming was brought out of not out of the customer service aspect, but it’s It was it was brought out by it’s this or piracy or it’s this or nothing we have no interest in pressing CDs anymore we have no interest in bringing consumers physical copies anymore it’s this or nothing and so you they have no choice but to do this and I think a lot of artists have come forward now that I’ve watched this video or at least a good portion of it I feel like I feel like I need to go back and see what these artists are saying because you know how it is you know when when Lars from Metallica was talking about how horrifying that mp3 were and we all gave him the finger and said yes screw you as you loaded up limewire whatever it was at the time right but now I go back and look into Hey cokie What’s up? new new listener hopped into the chat hello hello yeah, so I kind of I kind of commiserate a little bit more now with it with regards to these guys are being screwed and they really have no choice because the record the people who essentially own them aren’t giving them any other option. I don’t know. I thought it was I thought it was very sad and and you know, anything that anything that liquefies a product line like that or dilutes it or makes it such a diluted commodity and let’s be honest that’s what that’s what Netflix and Hulu and everything else are you’re spending X number of dollars a month on on content that you’ll never ever be able to fully watch and so you’re paying for things whether you consume them or not I don’t I don’t I just don’t get it. I mean the best argument I have is I don’t want I don’t want DVDs cluttering up my house I don’t have the space for him I almost buy that but but the concept of this is the greatest thing ever to not have to ever buy a movie or buy a television show or buy media or content it’s I don’t I don’t get it it’s not it’s not from Hey Brian oh what’s up man? You I uploaded you Night Trap PC Hey man I totally remember you Yeah, that was that was a rough time to get that thing man and I think I ended up getting it running in DOS box or something right yeah Night Trap boy that game just keeps turning up like a bad Penny huh? We’re we’re about do well they had a mobile version they had it on Android. I guess I’ll be playing it on Steam deck next that’ll be the next thing I do I suppose because Night Trap is Night Trap is ubiquitous with with gaming right so gotta see what other platform Night Trap comes everyone says Doom is actually the the game that you play on every system possible. But I’m going to I’m going to say I’m going to say let’s call it Night Trap for me. Or dragon slayer dragon slayer Night Trap. Same idea. Alright, so yeah, dark side of Spotify video, I recommend checking it out. Let’s see what else I got. I still got so many topics to talk about. This is great. So I am. I don’t remember how I got back to it. But for some reason I had to flip on Point Break again the other day earlier this week. So I find that when I’m working at home, right and I’m and I’m working and I’m doing documentation, doing paperwork, whatever. I like to have something very, very familiar running in the background. I know I’ve talked about this on the show. Some people like to put music on when they’re working. There’s something that there’s a wandering piece of your mind that can be quelled. If you put on familiar music, or you put on a familiar TV show, we call it background noise in my house. And there’s almost always something running if I wasn’t, if I wasn’t recording right now my son would probably be in the living room playing on his phone with The Goldbergs playing on the TV. He’s not watching it, but it’s background noise, it gives a piece of his mind something to do. Right. And I think that’s sort of how it works. So somehow I don’t remember maybe it was an article I read or something about Keanu Reeves or something, but it’s like, oh, I know what it was. I know what it was. A friend of mine at work was saying what a waste of time this meeting was or something like that. Or coming to this meeting was just a waste of time and I immediately went back to that red hot chili pepper guy can never remember his name off the top of my head but he’s in he’s got a part in in Point Break. And of course his his famous line, you know, when when they’re all surrounding canneries character, Johnny, Utah, and he’s like, yeah, this is the power were you telling me that yuppie surfer guys like me shouldn’t be on the break. And I should go back to the valley. And the guy’s like nope, and the other ones like that would be a waste of time. And then the other guy’s like, we’re just gonna fuck you up. And then of course, you know, classic movie anyway. And so I ended up finding a meme of that and I pasted it back to him and he started laughing It’s like dammit now I want to watch point breaks through Point Break on in the background. And a lot of times you know older movies through the rose colored glasses are still fun. And sometimes you can look at them ago. Yeah boy that has an age well has it has an age well at all. Usually, to be fair, though, it has to do with CG or, or, or, or really bad effects. Sometimes it is a time continuity scenario where, you know, like, if you watch movies from the 60s, there’s a completely different acting style than from the 70s, or the 80s. And then the 90s brought in this other weird Twilight type shit. There’s a whole nother acting genre, I suppose, from a different decade. pant. And so sometimes you can go back and that other genre of acting, you’re going wow, I can’t believe I actually watched this right or it worse yet. I actually liked this not just watched I loved it. For the most part of the rose colored glasses can overcome that sort of thing for me. But I was watching this point break. You know, it’s Kathryn Bigelow. You know, she did The Hurt Locker. I mean, she’s an accomplished filmmaker. It’s produced by James Cameron, who needs no introduction. And so yeah, you know, it’s kind of like a Patrick Swayze and January’s dumb movie. No, no, you know, it’s really actually a really good movie. And what’s even better about it is it’s like you don’t realize how many movies are just copies of Point Break. You know, there was a well, obviously, you know, Fast and Furious of courses, his Point Break with cars. I mean, it’s almost the same movie. I mean, I get it. You know, I used to think that’s bullshit. It’s like, Well, okay, maybe it’s not, it’s kind of true. But there was another, there was an actual movie. I can’t remember the name of it. I can go look it up. But it was about like a group of teenage girls that tried to rob a bank and they use Point Break as their point of reference. And I’m like, How great is that? You know, and they were the the president masks or they were talking about the president masks and the whole thing. Anyway, so I was, I was, I was like, kinda got sucked into it. I actually had to turn it off because I started watching instead of doing my work. Even though I’ve seen the movie a bajillion times. There’s, there’s great music in that movie. That’s something I didn’t I wasn’t paying attention to earlier on, in the you know, the tenure of enjoying that movie. But I realized that I’m waiting for musical cues. As as I’m watching the movie, and there’s certain songs that like they’ll kick in, and it it just it I don’t know, it’s hard to explain, but there’s a musical aspect of Point Break. It’s not because I love the soundtrack. I mean, I don’t own the soundtrack, which is weird. I mean, I own the soundtrack to some weird shit, but I don’t own the soundtrack two point break but I didn’t realize how important the music was to that movie until only recently you know. And so I started waiting to hear the musical cues and of course you know, it’s just it’s just a great movie. But I thought it was I thought it was interesting and then I noticed something and I noticed this a while back but I don’t think I talked about it on here which is weird cuz I’m talking about everything on here. I’m a huge fan of original aspect ratio, right? I want movies I want to see movies as they were intended by the director. You know, I was a very early letterbox and you know 16 by nine type guy and I still am I am very I’m very pissy about aspect ratio, and original intentions and all that good stuff. So I remember Point Break on television because that became a very popular movie that was played on I think it was on TV quite a bit too. I think it was on like cable, like TBS you know superstation w TBS from Chicago, and TNT all of these sort of like, you know, sort of mid tier cable channels they weren’t you got him with extended cable, but you didn’t get him with basic cable, but you didn’t have to pay extra for him. Right? Wow, there’s there’s a long gone era, right? basic cable, extended cable, pay channels. pay per view. And now nothing. Right? So yeah, I remember that movie. And of course they they clipped out the I mean, I don’t think there’s any nudity in there. There’s a little bit there’s a little tiny bit of nudity in it, but not much. There’s not a lot of blood and gore in it a little bit, but not much. There’s some cursing a little bit, but not much. Right? And so when you watched on TV, it was okay. But you know, the part that got me the most is it’s an painted scan on television. It was in pan and scan. It was in four by three. And so the pan and scan process right is they get some guy not usually the director, anybody that has a fucking clue. They get some guy to take a four, a four by three viewpoint and put it over the film and chop everything else off. Right and so they pan that view poll around the original print so to speak. So you have 16 by nine which this nice big rectangular screen like at the movies, and then they take one square that’s like your television and they just put it over a scene. In some cases, they just crop it right in the center, which makes absolutely no sense at all. And then sometimes they did what they called pan and scan, which was they would just, if there was somebody talking, they would put the box over that person even though that it’s more important to see the guy’s reaction to what he’s saying. This wasn’t the director doing this, some schmuck doing it and so people were making really shitty pain and scans and one thing I noticed unusual about Point Break and this is why I even put it in here and we’re talking about it and I don’t know if this is intentional I need to go and do more research pointbreaks when it’s shown on television starts in letterbox it starts in widescreen and then as soon as the credits are over, it kicks into pan and scan. That’s nutty, nutty, nutty and in fact as I recall the four by three DVD and the home video versions of it all start in widescreen and then the second at the credits are overwhelmed it goes to four by three and I understand why you’ll know to next time you watch Point Break look at the credits the credits are are shot in a way that the entire card they call those cards right sorry industry term the these title cards for the director the actor all these these cards won’t fit into a pan and scan screen and they actually travel across the screen go back and look I’ll wait go ahead go ahead and take a look real quick and then let me know when you guys are back and I’ll I’ll keep talking I’m just kidding. So yeah, it’s true if you look at it I swear to god This has to have been done intentionally it has to be Why on earth would you do it that way? If there wasn’t a reason for it and the reason was probably to dissuade them from using pan and scan. But they ended up doing it anyway. It’s really interesting and I’ve never ever seen that again I’ve never seen that situation done again. I’m sure it has been I just haven’t seen it but I thought that was interesting. I wanted to share that with you. Yeah pointbreaks pan and scan version is widescreen for the credits and then pan and scan for the rest the opening credits Yeah, so if you are in a Seuss Republic of Gamers owner if you own a laptop or a PC as a let’s say an A Seuss are Oh gee created box, I would go down and look at your system tray right now. Because if you look down there, the SIS tray being that little thing that shows all your running apps next to your clock. Go down there and take a look and see if you just happen to see something called the sonic sweet companion. You do? Did you put that there? No, you didn’t right? Guess what that’s probably been there for three or four days. You probably didn’t notice it because you’re like me and you have your sis tray collapse like that. That was handily installed for you by a real tech audio driver update. But she didn’t approve that to go through digit. This sort of thing pisses me off. It’s just like when Plex will take some new ad supported crap and shove it right in your face. You don’t get to opt in you have to opt out we’ll go down and check your systray see if it’s there fortunately it seems to uninstaller clean but I’ll tell you what, I don’t like mystery shit being installed on my computer where I come from, that’s called a virus or malware when they install shit you didn’t ask for this sort of thing pisses me off and I I am I am stunned that a manufacturer like a sous and a product line like Republic of Gamers, this is all important stuff. I mean, these are all this is big name to say mom and pop, you know, home you know home building PC, this is like this is like an industry industry leader. I don’t like that I don’t like them sneaking software onto my system. I am I am offended by that. But I thought it turns out that if you search Reddit for that, that’s where I ended up finding out about it. I was trying to figure out how the hell that got put in there. I didn’t install it. I didn’t install anything. Anytime I install anything I always do a custom install. So I’m watching every possible thing that goes in and I did not install anything that this would have been tied to so turns out it’s in some real tech driver update that a Seuss either via windows or themselves push so you might want to check that out. I am personally you know, listen, this this armory crate and all this other shit that a Seuss thinks that I really really have to have for my PC. I’m thinking I don’t need to have it. So I’m predicting somewhere in my near future. I’m looking at a clean Wipe, I bought this this is a this is a prebuilt that I got to Best Buy. This was before the big GPU crisis. I just don’t want to build my own computer anymore. I know I can get more computer for less blah blah blah. I just want to build my own computer anymore. It seems like every time I touch the insides of my computer I break something anymore. So it’s like Listen, I’ll just buy one premade is it turned out my other computer died I needed something quick and this is what I can get my hands on. So it’s a great computers, great hardware, great everything. It’s just I you know, I don’t like nasty little crap. I’ve tried to install that armory crate like 100 times and somehow it’s still there. I can’t get rid of it. I’m not I’m not done with that. That’s that’s old gateway. Compact shit back in the old days where they thought it was valuable to install all of that crap because you just might use it. And of course they were paid to put it there. Now I don’t know the background of the sonic sweet companion thing. But I’m somebody has listened. It wouldn’t be there. If somebody wasn’t making some kind of money on it. I’ll tell you that. All right. So we’re watching this thing called court cam. Let’s go back to some TV. It’s on a&e, as court cams pretty good. And I work for Maricopa County’s judicial branch and in Maricopa County, Maricopa County courtrooms are often featured on the show. And I was turned on to it by somebody at work, saying Yeah, have you seen this court cam? And I’m like, No, I’ve never even heard of it. And so yeah, check it out. And so, you know, my wife and I are always looking for that background noise we were talking about, right? Something that you know, you can occasionally look up and catch something fun. And then and then other times, you know, it’ll be like, it’s just background noise. But so we’ve been watching a lot of this court cam, I think we’ve watched all of them that are available. Now we’re, we’re in reran mode at this point. But we watched that when we Hots up. So we got to the tub, we’ll flip on the TV. And we’ll just put CT cam on. It’s pretty good show. I mean, listen, they’re not all winners. But there’s some there’s some crazy ass people my favorite thing. My favorite absolute favorite thing, which seems very, seems very trendy currently, is something called the sovereign citizen crap. These are people that believe that no laws pertain to them. They are sovereign citizens. And some of these guys are very creative. I mean, it’s a shame that they’re wasting their talents being wacky. But I mean, there are people that like I can’t remember there was one episode where what was it? I’m trying to remember the exact nomenclature because it’s more funny that way but essentially, the guy was brought before the judge and the guy is like, is this is this being is this court considered part of the British maritime blah blah blah. And of course the judge is looking at him like he lost his fucking mind, which he probably has. And and the judges like no, and then the guy starts rattling on about how the you know, there’s some sort of mockery going on because Esquire is something tied to old British maritime chords blah blah blah. It’s dude these guys are nuts. These guys are totally out there. And sometimes the fun is just they start off sounding sane. And before you know it, they are in what the fuck territory and they always turn out to be the sovereign citizens they don’t they don’t believe that they should be there you know, the fact that they committed some crime means nothing because as a sovereign citizen, the laws don’t apply to them endless like wow, and then the judges have that then the best part of that is as a judge what the hell do you do with that? I mean, do you argue with them? Did you look at him like they’re crazy? What do you do and so that’s the joy of court cam right? So you gotta you got to watch the show and and watch some of the sovereign I bet I bet somebody on YouTube is clipped out all the sovereign citizen clips out of court can because they’re the best then of course the other good part is where somebody just snaps like a twig and goes after tries to jump over the bench or, or literally beats the living shit out of the attorney sitting next to him before the cops get to them. It’s it’s nutty. Now listen, they’re not all like that. I don’t want to oversell the show as being this intense you know, court drama thing But listen, you’re watching enough of them you’re gonna see all sorts of good stuff so court can court can and tubbing It’s one of our favorite things to do. So thanks to the declassification of the Pentagon with the whole UFO paperwork and, and the US Navy videos and all that stuff UFO content is, is more than ever, we have more content than ever to choose from. And there are two that I’m watching right now because you know, I love this stuff. Top Secret UFO projects declassified that’s one of them. That’s the whole name. Look for that. This is a lot of dramatic repression. In a lot of storytelling and if you are really deep in UFO lore already there’s a lot of overlap you’re gonna see a lot of the same things you’ve seen before but this is not made by like promethease Entertainment so it’s not like they’re recycling everything from ancient aliens or something so it’s it’s it’s good and there’s new stuff in there but overall you’re gonna see a lot of the same familiar stuff but if you’re new and you’re trying to kind of get into the whole UFO lore thing or you’re trying to break your your significant other into it or family member or like hey you know I’m starting to get interested that’s you have you got any I know you’re a big UFO fan what what do you suggest I watch to get started well this would be a good show to send you know friends and family who are interested in getting up to speed a little bit on the whole UFO thing. And then Showtime with JJ Abrams in his Bad Robot production company, they’ve they released a four part UFO Documentary and for those of you who are well versed and well into the whole UFO lore thing you might look to this the entire first episode is on youtube for free so you can go watch that and see if it’s for you and then decide you know how you’re going to acquire and watch the other three episodes but it’s really really good it’s it’s very it’s very like factual base very Matter of fact you know George saluzzo is not there you know there’s no weird guy with hair going on and on and on. It’s it’s actually really good and they explore they explore sort of both sides right so the third the third episode is a lot about what could this be that’s not UFOs right? I mean, we know it’s not swamp gas we know it’s not weather balloons, but what could it be? What’s the what what explains away some of this stuff and it’s it but it’s done in a really interesting manner. So if you’re into this sort of thing I know some of you are. Take a look. It’s called UFO and it’s from Showtime and again, the first episode in fact, you know what? I bet it is in my history. Let me see if I can just paste that in UFO full series episode. To me paste that in the chat. So those of you who are listening to this later, you can go to the chat for this episode on spreaker. And you can get the direct link if you can’t find it, cuz UFO is a little bit of a kind of a generic term. If you type UFO show on YouTube, you’re gonna you might have some trouble finding it. So there you go. Good stuff, good stuff. Loving that. Loving that. Let’s see. Got a couple of other things on TV and movies. I’ll do one on movies next. So somehow, I never saw Wesley Snipes, the art of war that came out in 2000. And I think 2000 that wasn’t that long ago, then you realize it’s like 21 years old. Wow. Right. And so the Art of War, which, by the way, has like tons of famous people, and it’s like, how did I not see this? I don’t have the Navy to use it as an excuse. I was well out of the Navy at that point. But somehow I missed this movie. I mean, it’s got Wesley Snipes and Donald Sutherland and Michael Biehn and who else was in there, the guy that plays Shang song on the original Mortal Kombat sin they’re down, there’s like, Everywhere you look, it’s like I know him. I know him. I love that guy. I love that guy. And so I was watching this and it’s a really long movie. It’s it’s a good two hour movie. And okay, it’s thin, right? Listen, I understand why I probably didn’t see it is essentially, you know, covert agent gets framed for doing something and that was on the run, trying to prove his innocence, that sort of thing. But you can tell that they were sort of nudging for this high tech appeal. So like the first part of the movie shows them bouncing off bouncing an IR reader off of a mirror trying to read the backside of a laptop’s IR port. So you know, they were trying to they’re trying to look tech sexy, right? And you guys know how this works out? The the older the movie, and the further away from current technology, you get sort of the more pathetic that looks. And you can tell there’s some CG in there, but it’s mostly like it CG of computers, if that makes sense, right? So when you’re looking at a computer readout. If you’re looking at like a high tech, PC layout, you’re seeing CG, but it’s okay because it’s a computer so it’s okay if it’s CG. But for the most part, you know, so I watched this whole movie, and listen, I could cut that movie down to a tight 88 minutes. No problem. Just give me the print. I’ll work it out and I’ll give you Art of War to 20 you know, 2021 no problem. But I watched the movie and you know it Listen, it’s Wesley Snipes. And there’s not much from Wesley Snipes I didn’t care for but you know, he’s got that kind of new look. You know, he had that blade look for a while that passenger 57 Look, and then he sort of moved to a different look. This was in that era where he moved to that different look. It’s not to say that the movie is bad at all. I mean, it’s got like, it was an ant hat, not Anne Hathaway. It’s one of those other famous ads. And hey, shout out anyway, there was another there’s a woman in there. That’s another famous name. It’s like, Oh, I know her. I know them. I know them. But I got to the end of this movie, and I was thinking, I watched it and I think, four or five parts. It was an art trainer. It was an art trainer movie for me. So I watched it in four or five parts, because I do 35 minutes on the art trainer. And so I got to the end of it. And listen, I love that guy that plays Shang song. I love Donald Sutherland. I mean, I like I love the actors in there. So it wasn’t, I mean, it was it was entertaining. And I love Michael bean. It’s a shame that he didn’t go further, I guess. But it’s got a nice plot twist. Listen, it’s not a bad movie. It’s just like, Okay, I get why I didn’t see it, then. I’m glad I saw it. That’s cool. But I got to the end of it. And I was thinking it was kind of mediocre. Why am I okay with that? And I was I started analyzing and over and maybe over analyzing the whole concept, right? Because this is the year 2000 that this movie came out, right? So we’re not fully I mean, we’ve got the CGI enhanced movies at this point. But it’s not like we’ve gotten into full CGI breakdown. So I’m thinking to myself, okay, that’s probably why I was okay with it. Because I’m okay when CGI is used for CG, right for computer graphics. Like like Tron. If you use CGI for a Tron movie, that’s a no brainer. When you’re using CGI to shove a shark character into a movie that absolutely looks totally fake, and the physics even look wrong. That’s when I start having problems and unfortunately, they can’t seem to fucking help themselves by doing that. But I digress. So I watched the movie and I realized something. It’s a difference in the way movies are made. It was probably shot on film, not digital. Right? Now that there’s anything wrong was shooting on digital unless it looks like it was shot on digital. And you guys know exactly what I’m talking about. You can shoot on digital to make it look like film. And most of the time that works where’s where’s more drag? Why isn’t Mike in here Mike would love this conversation. I should ping him and see if he wants to join me see if he’s around. Yeah, so I was I was thinking to myself Yeah, so it wasn’t shot on digital. So shot on film, which which immediately gives a different look and feel, which I definitely relate to. And this this was brought on by another conversation I was having with a guy on Twitter. He was talking about he just watched all the Superman movies and he realized that man of steel and Superman Returns he used to like Superman Returns more than Man of Steel and now what do you say there was more right good about Superman Returns than was bad about it. And vice versa for Superman or for Man of Steel, but now he’s changed his mind. And so we’re sort of talking about the the merit the merit of of of have Superman Returns, because I I was sort of one of those people who was not a super fan of Superman Returns. Not in I think it was because I don’t know I didn’t I didn’t care for them. I didn’t care for Lex Luthor. I think I think they tried to make him I mean, I think Kevin Spacey, it risk of my own demise, of course, but I like Kevin Spacey as an actor, and I thought that he was an interesting choice for Lex Luthor, but I’m gonna be honest with you. He they made him too sadistic in that movie. You know, Gene Hackman, Gene Hackman, this was a little more slap sticky, but I felt it a little more. Like it fit more into the comic book realm where Kevin Spacey was sort of, I don’t know, I just I didn’t care for now. I loved Brandon Ruth. I thought holy crap. He literally is channeling Christopher Reeve and he did a great job as as Superman and Clark Kent. So I love that bit. But you know, I and there’s the difference between man steel and and Superman Returns is is very simple. 90% of Superman Returns wasn’t shot on green screen, and you can tell that Man of Steel was and so I started it sort of started relating that to my art of war experience. I guess because as stupid as this, this no name movie from the 2000 suddenly makes me start extrapolating all of this different thought process. But you know, one of the things that made the art of war, a decent movie was the fact that wasn’t 90% shot on green screen. And you can tell when a movie is shot on green screen you Just can, there is an air about it’s usually shot on digital, it’s shot on green screen. And you know, the actors hate that shit. I mean, these guys did not sign up to be talking to, you know, green tape wrapped. You know, styrofoam balls hanging from the ceiling, they didn’t sign up for that shit, which I really got to admire, like Mandalorian. And some of these other newer shows, are actually doing sort of the technological, the technological spiritual successor of what they call front and back. projection video, right? So if you were to watch say, Battlestar Galactica, the old one, the good one, if you were to watch Battlestar Galactica from the 70s, and you are in the Viper, flying around with Starbuck, and Apollo, what you’re seeing behind them is a real thing. It wasn’t added later, the space in the stars and everything behind them, were actually projected onto a screen behind them. And that’s, well, it’s still, it’s still got a fake looking element to it, it’s really there, it’s physically there, and they can see it, when they’re, when they’re looking over their shoulder, you know, to see a ship coming up at them or something like that. There’s something for them to see that it puts them in that scenario, right. And so I know that there’s technology that they’re working with, with like, I know, Mandalorian was one of them, where they’re actually building virtual sets, instead of shooting them on a green screen, and putting the shit in later, they’re actually putting them in a scene where they can properly light it and everything else is just, I mean, it’s like, Yes, okay, that’s it, you guys are starting to catch on the green screen. CGI is shit, you’re starting to figure it out, you’re trying to find a way to do it better. And I admire that. But this this whole Art of War thing, and I realized, you know, this was all shot on film. It was shot. It was shot on on locations, it you know, there were real people in the scene with them. There was nobody CG running around. It was there was a, I guess, I don’t know that it’s real, it feels more real. And, and you go back and I started watching, you know, maybe that’s like Point Break and things like that. There is it’s visceral, there’s a visceral nature to it, where, you know, the actors are looking at each other, you know, the actors are seeing something explode. It’s not fake. And I don’t know, I know, grumpy, grumpy old man, get off my lawn, whatever. But I thought it was really interesting that the art of war, if nothing else is interesting that the art of war is what you know, sort of pushed me to start thinking about this. Let’s see. I’ve been using that Google Drive for desktop for quite a while now and kind of wanted to let everything sort of settle. It’ll be like a full mainstream product, I believe in October, late September, October. But if you were sort of holding off because it’s a pre release, and you’re kind of skeptical about using it. It’s really great. It’s it’s like I said in a previous episode, so many things like expand drive, and airlive Drive and all these other things have been promising. What Google Drive for desktop is actually delivering and it’s free. Listen, if you hate Google, then you’re obviously there’s a problem with that. But if you’re using drive, then you must not hate Google that much. So it’s worth taking a look at now, all the features are in there. It’s not it’s still a pre release, but I recommend checking it out. If you’re a heavy Google Drive user, and you’re looking to mount a drive that you can immediately access your Google Drive contents inside of Windows. To no brainer, no brainer. Let’s see. It’s almost an hour and a half. I got to get off of here. Let’s do one more thing, the Amiga Mini. Now I was a huge fan of the C 64 Mini and of course the C 64. Maxi and I of course I’m a huge Commodore fan in general. I think it’s amazing. I thought I think Commodore was mismanaged into the ground later on. In fact, I saw it personally. As many of you know, I was there when Eskom met with the last remaining developers of third party Amiga products. I was there watching them literally nail comedor up on a cross. For the final. The final death of Commodore It was very, very sad. However, I still think that the if you’re going to put me on a deserted island and I can pick one system and every piece of software for that system to maintain me for eternity. It would probably be the Commodore 64 I’ll say it right now. But the Amiga of course was it still is in some cases just an amazing system. And so it’s really cool that they are looking to make the Amiga mini as an available product. It’s pre ordering now it’s expensive Of course and it’s only in the UK or in Europe, I believe right now. But of course I will get my hands on one and I will tell you about it. They’ve got a decent lineup of included games of course nothing from psygnosis which listen psygnosis and Amiga are symbiotic beings right? To say that you’re going to get an Amiga mini without shadow with the beast. It’s almost it’s almost a crippling, crippling thing to even consider that. The fact that this is not going to ship with anything from psygnosis on it is criminal. Criminal I say. But we do have like Team 17 stuff. Hey, Ashley de a friend of mine from Twitter. Their team 17th got representation there and Team 17 is definitely on the top five, five developers for the Amiga. So we’re going to get things like worms. Things of that nature. I know that sounds bad. I’ve got worms. But no Listen, Team 17 did great, great stuff. I’m really hoping that we can get some stuff from Guild Hall leisure or acid software things like roadkill guardian. There’s just there’s there’s tons and tons and tons of great software for the Amiga. And I’m hoping that the built in stuff they’ve only released like half of the titles so far. So I’m really hoping that they will that they will extrapolate that into they’re never going to get psygnosis titles man Sony owns them lock stock and barrel. And I don’t think for a minute that they could ever get Sony to part with something like lemmings or, or, of course Shadow of the Beast or listen. There’s there’s so many great games from psygnosis on the Amiga, it’s almost it’s almost disgusting. They should have been like a first party developer for the Amiga, right? They pretty much were I mean, games like anarchie The Killing game show nytro blah blah blah list goes on and on and on. Like gnosis had the games man, you bought a side gnosis game sight unseen, title unknown, new psygnosis title, take my money, give me my T shirt. Give me my game because you knew it was going to be quality. That shit doesn’t happen anymore, man. There’s not a single company out there including the big names like Blizzard EA, you name them. Nobody has 100% track record like psygnosis did psygnosis was quality, just like EA was in the early days. But anyway, I digress. So the Amiga Mini, not a lot known yet. It comes with a with an authentic Amiga mouse. And it comes with oddly enough a cd 32 looking controller, which again I’m totally and I love the cd 32 controller so I’m very excited about this product I know some of you will be very excited to. With that said I’ve got a couple of other things, but these are too long topics to get into towards the end of this episode. I hope you enjoyed this, this live episode coming from my desktop. Next time we’ll probably be back in the hot tub with the Delta variant kicking around. My return to work is not looking like it’s happening anytime soon. So passenger seat radio will continue to be the hot tub edition. Unless of course I do another one like this. Anyway, hope you enjoyed it. This is Shane R. Monroe with passenger seat radio. Thanks so much for listening in. Take care
