Hello everybody, this is Shane Armin row and you are in the passenger seat with me it’s passenger seat or radio. It is Saturday February 4 2023. And you are not on my 13 mile commute home. As you can see I am in fact sitting at my workstation doing the show. Welcome to the program. Well, for some of you this will be the absolute first time you’ve ever even heard of passenger seat radio despite I’m on my like 11 100th episode at this point. I’ve been doing this for like 17 years now passenger seat radio. And well lately the shows have been farther and fewer between. And obviously once all of the fun stuff in my past has been talked about my time in the Navy nucular Power School, the interesting things that I’ve had with old wives and girlfriends, obviously, the stories eventually run out, which is why I stopped doing my podcast, retro gaming radio. Because I ran out of stories I ran out of people to interview. So maybe you’ll remember me from retro gaming radio that was far more popular than passenger seat radio. And of course, if you have been following my YouTube channel, I’ve been doing a lot of steam deck stuff. I’ve been getting a lot of folks just like you who are big fans of steam deck, and I’ve been watching the shows there. So I have been busy, busy, busy trying to sort of grow my channel through the steam deck. And I did VR for a while. And now, you know, I thought, hey, listen, maybe I can expose passenger seat radio to a new group of fans that are here for Steam deck, but might be interested in some of the other interesting things going on in my life. So passenger seat radio.com is where you can see a lot of the archives. Like I said, we have like 1100 episodes here on Spreaker. I think there’s been like 800 and plus episodes, and that long before then was live liberated syndication. And before then it was just me popping up on a website somewhere before the whole podcast revolution really came down. So anywho I’ve got an empty chat room. I know many of you don’t tend to catch the show, when it’s on a Saturday morning. God bless you, you’re asleep. And that’s probably the way that it should be. I am not asleep. However, my wife had to go into work. And yeah, so I just hanging out and I thought, hey, haven’t had a show in a while. So let’s do that. Okay, so it’s been a fairly busy couple of weeks nothing really of note other than we’ve had some interesting PC games release. Recently that includes for spoken, and the Dead Space 2023 remaster. And both of those games have pissed everybody off. And I think it’d be interesting to sit and talk about why. And I’m not sure, we also have to talk about The Last of Us, we got all sorts of things to talk about today. For those of you who are brand new to the show, just a quick, just a quick overview of what this show is. This is a real time chronicle of my life. And I do go back and talk about previous things that have happened in my life. So I’ll tell Navy stories I have which by the way, the Navy stories are great. Unfortunately, I’ve told most of them. So if you go to passenger seat radio.com and search for Navy, you will find plenty of shows that will talk about that. But I like to, I like to make every show a time piece or a period piece of what’s happening right then. So if you’ve been listening long enough, you know that I’ve covered every major event in my life, I’ve covered events going on outside as long as they stay out of the political rain, because I don’t talk politics or religion very much on the show. Because those are the two topics that well frankly, piss everybody off. So we don’t talk about those things. And I well, I am not. I am not radical towards either side of the political or religious spectrum. I definitely have my opinions and my opinions would probably not be popular with everybody. So let’s just keep those mostly to myself showing. But one thing we always talk about is technology, what’s going on how much I hate Facebook, you know, those sort of things are usually regular, regular things here on the show. So let’s talk about what’s going on in the world today. So let’s start off with these new games that I was just talking about for spoken and dead space. And then we got some other cool games we’ll talk about. We’ll talk about some deck stuff and of course PC gaming. And yeah, we’ll see where it goes from there. I’ll try to keep the show under an hour. All right, so if you’re listening live, why not join us@spreaker.com Find passenger seat radio and you can jump on this episode. Live while we’re doing it, of course, if you’re watching this on YouTube, well, obviously, there’s not much I can do for you there because you’re not watching this live, you’re watching it as a rerun, so to speak. So, but if, if you’re out there and you’ve tuned in and you’re listening, why not join us on our live, real time text chat, that’s also up in the damn reverse camera. It’s right there. It’s taking my finger away. Ai smart, but not that smart. Anyway, Chad will be on the side, if anybody decides to join us. I thought I’d try something different with this show, right? YouTube seems to be where I’m more popular than in podcasting. So maybe I can merge, merge, merge the two together. Okay, so let’s talk about these two games. So for spoken and dead effect have two things in common. One of which they are. They are brand new games. And two, they tend to be polarizing people. And so what I mean by that, why are they polarizing games? Well, let’s start off with four spoken, which is a $70 game. And my YouTube channel is not big enough to get review copies of triple A games, folks. So I had to pay full price for a game that had no reviews. And we know why now that had no discounts I had to pay MSRP. To, to get this game up. And frankly, I use these new games as sort of a platform to test on Steam deck and help other people get settings and show them what works and what doesn’t work. So I figure if I’m making money on the YouTube channels with through affiliate links and through advertising, then why not put money back into the show, right. And that’s typically what I tend to do. I mean, I’ve got a full time job, I have a comfortable living, right? I don’t I don’t need YouTube money. But YouTube monies. Affiliate monies do pay for the toys and gadgets that I review on the show. And occasionally I get a freebie, I always disclose it. But most of the time I’m paying full price or almost full price. So for spoken was a $70 nut that I had to bust and quite frankly, that wasn’t that wasn’t a good investment. And there’s many reasons why it wasn’t a good investment. Right? And we’ll talk about that. And dead space. Both of these games are suffering from what is currently known as, as woke culture. Right? Or at least that’s what they say. And me personally, right? So just so that you guys know where I’m coming from. I’m a centralist, that leans left, right, I’m not a radical left winger. I’m not dead set in the middle as a as a moderate I am definitely a little bit on the the left hand side of the scale. So I don’t have a problem with you know, LGBTQ, I don’t have a problem with any of that stuff. Whatever, whatever floats your boat, right, I’m okay with that. As long as you’re not hurting anybody else. So, you know, I don’t tend to, I don’t tend to really worry about stuff like that. Right. So yeah, I don’t, you know, my son’s growing up, you know, it’s very interesting being an older dude and having a younger son, who who doesn’t really see color he’s grown up in, in a, in a world where, you know, most people aren’t worried about that sort of thing. And that’s an I get a better sense of. Hi. Hi, my son’s here. I’m doing a passenger seat radio, and I’m recording the video. I see. Yeah. What are you doing? Okay, so anyway, yeah, so it gives you a different perspective, right? When you’re normally my age, or kids are out of the house. And you sort of you sort of fall victim to those you associate with and to what the media tells you or what your politicians are telling you, or you know, whatever. Right. But I’ve had an opportunity. You know, my, my wife came out publicly as bisexual. So there’s all sorts of different I have a different perspective and slant on things where I think a lot of people my age don’t and they say you get more conservative as you age, I kind of feel like maybe as I’m getting older, I’m seeing more and I’m, I’m getting an opportunity to not fall into that standard written rent. So when I see when I see people complaining about dead space, having gender free bathrooms, right, the little sign that says, you know, gender free bathroom or whatever, I can’t remember exactly what it is the terminology but yeah, that doesn’t. Listen, I am about preservation, though. So what bothers me isn’t the fact that they changed it to something I’m socially conscious. I don’t care about that. I care that they took original IP and they changed it. Right. If if you’re going to do a remake of something, bring up the graphics bring up the bring up the the audio make the audio crisper, make the audio better, make the visuals better. I fix any problems with it fix the bugs get the get the controllers situation figured out, right? But leave you don’t you don’t need to interject the flavor of the day or flavor of the month or flavor of the year into these remakes you. You shouldn’t I mean, you, the fans that are buying dead space, don’t want you to mess with what they love about the game. It doesn’t really matter if it’s just as gender free the game still the same? It is but it isn’t. Right. So if you were to let’s just say that you were playing I don’t know, I’m trying to come up with a specific example. But imagine you’re playing a game like, I don’t know, Duke Nukem. And there’s a billboard that at the time that billboard had, I don’t know, Cheesy Poofs ad on it. Whatever. Anyway, cheesy puffs are gone. Or somebody else I got a better I got a better idea. Let’s say that you had an old game from the 90s that had an Aunt Jemima syrup ad on a billboard. Whether that was paid or not, it doesn’t really matter. But when you’re playing Duke Nukem, and you’re running around, or whatever this game is you’re running around, and you see a billboard of that your mom on it. And now if the remake took that off, because it’s insensitive, right, and air bunnies, I’m making little air bunnies here insensitive. And instead you decide to put, I don’t know, a banner up for you know, LGBTQ, whatever, whatever you feel is necessary to reflect 2023. That’s not doing it’s not really doing anybody any favors. When I want to, if I’m gonna go back and play a remake of a game, I don’t want to see it brought up to today. One of the reasons I’m playing it is because it came out, quote yesterday that it’s an older title, that there’s nostalgia factor in it for me, seeing gender free bathrooms, all nothing that does nothing to improve the quality of the game, other than to sort of, I don’t know, poke a bear. And I realize that what seems to be happening now, is these sort of what they call woke principles. I don’t even know what you would call it, per se. But they are using these now, almost as promotional tools. Right? So if you want to spend $100 million on a movie, and you want to make sure that that movie does as good as it can and gets as much press as it can, you literally inject things, you know, will piss people off in order to somehow make make sure that it can’t fail. And if it does fail, it’s not because it was a shitty movie, which is probably the case, but it’s because it had female characters or it had people of color characters or whatever. That’s the reason why it failed. And you all are just racist, bigoted, misogynistic pigs, but, I mean, I don’t. That doesn’t make any sense to me. I mean, I know why they’re doing it, I get it, but it just, it really bothers me that that’s sort of where we’re leaning to. And so Deadspace has its detractors, and they’re not totally thrilled about it. You know, my camera’s on right? Get stopped. photobombing me get out of here. I’m gonna sit down here. Listen, well, let’s sit over there while you’re off my camera. They don’t want to see you. They don’t want to see me to be honest with you. I know. Man anyway, so let’s be honest, right? Things are getting a little out of control. And I’m saying that as a slightly left leaning centralist. I think things are getting out of control. And then we look at so let’s and so that’s the big thing wrong with with dead space. Right? That’s, that’s what people are up in arms about, frankly, it’s not worth being up in arms about outside of the fact forget about it being a gender free bathroom, what you should be complaining about is that they took your IP something that you cared about, and they altered it. And now that’s canon, right? That’s what happens. They don’t they meaning the people that are injecting today’s viewpoints into classic IP don’t realize what they’re doing. They are changing canon. If for some reason Deadspace gets remade again in 10 years. What do you think it’s gonna say? Right? Is it going to say men and women bathrooms? Is it going to say gender free bathrooms? Or will it be whatever the flavor of the day is? In 10 years, but if they don’t change it, right, if they decide to create a new dead space, or remake dead space, again, they’re going to start not with the, what? 2003 2007. I can’t remember the year, they’re not going to start with that version. They’re going to start with the 2023 version. And that’s what’s going to be perpetuated. So I don’t like the idea that IPs are being changed. And those IP changes become canon, whether it’s books, movies, television shows, video games. these things become the direction that these products and these companies are taking. And that’s how it will continue to be in the future. I don’t like that. So let’s take a look at for spoken. So for spoken was, again the $70 game that they didn’t allow any reviews to go out ahead of time. And now we know why because the game 90? Well, I’d say 85% sucks. And let me tell you why. And it has nothing to do with the fact. Well, it is maybe it has something to do with the fact but it has really nothing to do with the fact that the protagonist in the game is a female of the color persuasion has nothing to do with that. It has to do with the terrible writing the horrible dialogue, the repeating dialogue, the actually very poor storyline that’s going on the the game is a complete mess. From a technical standpoint, there is 1,000,001 reasons to hate this game, you don’t need a female protagonist of color, you don’t need to be reminded that the you know, one of the very first areas that you get to where you have a group of people in charge right account. So I don’t want to for those of you who wanted to play this game, I don’t want to give away any spoilers. But you get arrested and you get brought in front of the Council of Elders, we’re just gonna call him the council of elders, because that’s something very generic. So you get brought in front of the Council of Elders. Who do you think is in charge of said council of elders? It’s a it’s an African American woman or a woman of color? Because it Yeah, I mean, they’re not African American in this world. But what I’m saying is, is a man can’t be in charge, and a white man certainly can’t be in charge. So they put a black female in charge, or female of color in charge. Now, the only white person I saw that was on the staff at the time was the guy that was sort of the blithering idiot, he’s the one who wants to take her head off. Meanwhile, the wise, remaining female of the council members all want to you know, they want to do the right thing and proceed with caution. So the white male was cast as sort of a minor villain in this situation. It’s totally unnecessary. You don’t need to do that. But unfortunately, that’s, that’s sort of what it’s come down to. The dialogue is riddled with profanity for no reason whatsoever. And here’s probably the worst part for spoken outside of some of the technical aspects of it, is the the idea that, let’s be honest, the female protagonist, forget about female, I’m never gonna say female, female of color anyway, you don’t need any of that. All you need to know is she is the most unpleasant person I’ve ever played in a video game. Right? Even those games like that you play the anti hero, but you sometimes disagree with even though you play the storyline with him. And it’s like he’s doing terrible things to people. But you know, he’s an anti hero. So you kind of you kind of, you kind of commiserate, you work with him. This character that you play in for smokin has absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. You don’t like her. You don’t like how she talks you don’t like who she is. Her attitude sucks. She, you know, she’s not she’s not a great she’s not a good character. And that is not a result of her being a female. It’s not a result of her being a female of color. It’s not a result of any of that, which is exactly what the people that are publishing this game or writing this game will tell you. This is why people hate the game. Because it’s a female person of color in charge and nobody likes it. No, it’s because she sucks. She’s a shitty character. It’s just that simple. It’s a shitty character with a shitty storyline was shitty dialogue and terrible writing. That’s enough to not like the game. But then to insert everything else on top of that, all you’re doing is all you’re doing is is sparking debate and hate and nonsense. It’s just, it’s ridiculous. I just I just I don’t know, I don’t even know where to go from there. But you know, what’s really sad about for spoken is that it’s not a complete train wreck. It’s just like 85% of a train wreck. So there are some neat qualities of that game, the magic parkour, the combat is remarkably fun and engaging. But unfortunately, those pieces of the equation come and go. Meanwhile, you’re still saddled with somebody you hate playing that somebody you don’t like somebody who makes, you know, nasty frickin comments and just has a foul mouth on she’s from the streets of Chicago and that’s how they talk. Okay, fine, whatever. But, but the writers plan that and so far, her being a disk, you know, an unprivileged, disk privileged, less than privileged child from the ghetto means nothing to this storyline, nothing. Nothing is being brought to that. There’s, I don’t know, it’s bad writing, right. That’s what it is. It’s bad writing. So I don’t know I Don’t know what they were thinking with this game? I mean, obviously they weren’t. Or you know, somebody was thinking way too far inside the box if this game could have been great. And I hope that they take this game, they use the engine, they use the combat methodology and they reframe it. Let’s make the character somebody give a rat’s ass about right. Why would you why would you want to spend 20 3040 hours playing a game where you hate the the person you’re playing? That you don’t like them? You have no commiseration with them? I don’t know. So that’s what’s wrong with for spoken. So I mean, it’s already down 20 $30 On sale already. It’s getting terrible reviews, all of the scores are terrible for it. And it deserves it deserves every single one of them. And not because of the woke injection, or whatever they want to call it. It’s because it’s just, it’s just a badly written, badly written game. So yeah, so those are the sorts of things that we’re dealing with now. And then you take, and then you take the last of us, right, the new hit show, based on a video game, right. And so we all know that video game properties. Sometimes they hit their mark, sometimes they don’t. I don’t care about that IP at all. Right? That’s not That’s not a property that I care at all about. So I don’t care what they do with it. However, I do know, there’s a lot of people that are incredibly passionate about The Last of Us IP. And and these are the people, these are the people that want to watch that show. These are the people that want to, you know, further that IP down the road, they want to see that that property made into movies and TV shows and more games and better games. That’s what they want. And so apparently, now, again, somebody will have to cross check me, because I don’t know, this property, all that well. What I do know is they dropped two episodes of the show. And everybody loved it. The fans, the non fans, everybody seemed to love it, the original creator of the IP was involved. And everyone loved it. Well, then the third episode dropped. And apparently, somewhere in there, they had to throw in two guys, two guys, gay guys in a relationship. And they took I think one of the cast, one of the people from the IP made him gay, or maybe he was gay in the IP? I don’t know, but I don’t think so. And they basically sort of wedged that in. And of course, that’s going to cause problems, right? Of course, you’re you’re taking somebody’s storyline, somebody cares about that. That person, a lot of people, a lot of people care about that storyline, a lot of people care about the IP. And so what they’ve done is in order to, you know, send the message, as critical drinker would say, instead of instead of staying with the IP, they decided to inject that. And I don’t know, was that the right thing to do? I don’t know, it’s not my opinion, I don’t care about it. But I know a lot of people do. And a lot of people are upset about it. But again, this is sort of one of those things where we sit down and we talk about what they’re doing, if you want. So here’s what I’m thinking, right. So if you look, historically speaking, what’s been done in the past, every 20 years or so, right, the 20 year revolution, if you will, every 20 years or so, society takes a slight skew, we lean a direction, we need something to fight for, we need something to fight against whatever. And those things make it into our arts. Right? When the Vietnam war was going on, artists went out, and they recorded music that reflected their opinions on the war. In fact, a lot of your favorite songs from that era may actually be anti war songs, and you never even knew it. Because they can’t just outright say war is bad, right? They have to weave it into something that happens to sell on the music stands, right or sell on the radio, they can play on the radio, but a lot of these artists in the late 60s went out to eat and they wrote new songs to reflect the the stage of human existence and cultural existence at that point in time. And so that’s, that’s great. I mean, our our arts should in some way reflect what’s going on with the culture that we’re currently experiencing. Now, here’s the problem is they should be making new things right. Don’t take old things that people care about, like Ghostbusters, or, or other property, Star Wars, whatever. Don’t take properties did exist in the past and retool them to fit whatever you want to portray today. Right? Don’t take Charlie’s Angels don’t take any of these things that are. That means something to people, these brands have value, they have value, not because of what you inject into them now, they have value because of what they were and what people loved about them. And what it what is the nostalgia factor, all of these sorts of things. So what they’ve done in the past, right, so they didn’t take, you know, they didn’t take 13 ghosts from the 60s, remake it and make it an anti war movie. But they didn’t do that. You know, the, they create new things to echo the social sentiment in our in our world order, and what they shouldn’t be doing instead of taking properties that people care about, like Star Wars, Star Trek, all of these things, and injecting whatever today’s values are, because let’s be honest, and 20 years, today’s values are not going to be the same. Right? We’ve seen so many value shifts over the course of our history, that the only thing we can be 100% sure about is in 20 years, whatever the social values are today will not be the same. And again, what you’re doing is tarnishing this content from the these eras, you’re tarnishing them, shoving them forward kicking and screaming into whatever today’s mentality is. That’s not fair. And it’s you can say, well, no one’s taking away the original. You don’t like Ghostbusters afterlife, you didn’t like Ghostbusters? 22,016 Well, you don’t have to like that because your Ghostbusters is safe and sound back in 1985. The thing is, is it’s not right. It’s not safe anymore, because you’ve destroyed the cannon that built around it. Ghostbusters going forward will not be the 1985 Ghostbusters it will not be what made Ghostbusters. Great. Right? I can’t remember if it was critical drinker or somebody else that did a video about Ghostbusters, and why the original was a work of art. And the Ghostbusters all female cast remake was a complete dumpster fire. And it had nothing to do with the fact that they were all female and all female cast members. It had to do with the fact that the lightning in a bottle that was Ghostbusters was completely ignored in this new movie. And so that’s what you’ve done now is you’ve set the pace moving forward for an IP that didn’t want your input. And that’s kind of what we’re talking about. Right? That’s what we’re talking about with, say, The Last of Us, right, this had an existing cannon that is now being tampered with. People don’t like it. Why would they like that? Okay, you can claim that it has to do with the gay thing you can claim it has to do with the girl being black instead of white. You claim all that stuff. And unfortunately, the majority of the public falls back on what they can see in here, which is oh, well, she used to be white now. She’s black. That’s messed up. Well, it’s they’re probably okay. So there’s, I’m sure they’re racist and misogynistic people out there. What I’m saying is you’re tampering with what they love. It has nothing to do well, it has something to do with what they can see which is white to black, right? That’s something that idiots can figure out. Well, they changed the character from white to black. That’s why I’m pissed off. It’s not probably maybe who knows? What they’re upset about is that you’re monkeying with what they remember. RIGHT? Jimmy Olsen was a teenager right out of high school a little bit bumbling, a little wet behind the ears. And in Superman. Jimmy Olsen was this young, this young boy, you know, he is Clark Kent was sort of his mentor. He took him under his wing helped him learn the ropes. You know, to turn Jimmy Olsen into an old black man. What’s the point of that? Right? Does does Was that necessary? For the Superman cannon to move forward? Maybe maybe not. I don’t think so. I mean, to be truthful, you’re again, you’re messing with things now. I would suggest that are you just getting ready to go? Not wanting to put it in? What? Well, I just wanted to continue talking. Another example I can think of is the new terrible show Velma. Right? It’s not necessarily that they changed her from white to black. You know, they do that a lot nowadays. Yeah. It’s the fact that they completely reworked every main character from Scooby Doo, right? I’m totally different people. Right? And then the plot sucks. The company just does not care about what people think about the show. Right? Because they just want money. They just ruined Scooby Doo pretty much. Yeah. So there you go. There’s there’s Gen Z’s input on things even they’re pissed off about it. Will be by the way, oh, by the way, for those of you who are listening, if you’re on the chat, it is public it is being seen on the video. Obviously you can see this chat if you if you’ve tuned in, and you’re not interested in watching this on YouTube. You can go back to this episode on Spreaker. And you can see the chat. So we’ll be says the word you’re looking for is, is set sacrosanct. I’m not familiar with that word, I might need a, I might need a proper dictionary, translation of that word. All I can tell you is, is what we’re seeing is a problem. And but it’s not necessarily the problem that everybody thinks that it is. Unfortunately, this woke injection of what we’re dealing with right now has less to do with what the criers are saying that it’s black, it’s gay, it’s it’s female versus male. It has more to do with monkeying with people’s memories monkeying with people’s nostalgia. I don’t I mean, we had a female Superman already. Right. And Supergirl, we’ve had one of those, we’ve got that there’s a whole rich heritage of female Superman in the comic books and in the AIP, it already exists, right? So we don’t need that. We don’t need to somehow move that forward. We already had it. We’ve got it. You know, and a lot of things, you know, people, you know, people say, you know, we I think we talked about this on the show before, but it’s like, oh, we need strong female heroes, guys, we’ve had them, just because you don’t remember them that you don’t remember Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman, you don’t remember, you know, all of these people that came before you doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen. We’ve had the Bionic Woman we’ve had strong, emotionally intact females strong leads as superheroes. You’re not You’re not saving society from itself. We’ve had it just because you’re not old enough to remember I’m not my problem, right. So you know, it’s one of those things where, and this is something brand new that I’ve just started witnessing is the reinvention of everything that already exists by the current generation. Right? My son here is sitting here, he’s a Gen Z here. So I don’t want to insult him or his, his people. But all of a sudden Gen Z is figuring everything out. And they’ve got the answers, right. They’re figuring out that they don’t want to use a camera phone, they want to use a real camera, all of a sudden, that’s the thing. We don’t want to use wireless bluetooth headphones. We’re gonna use real wired headphones, because they sound better. No shit. We’ve been telling you that for 20 fucking years for crying out loud. Oh, vinyl. That sounds let me vinyls it and that’s the real way to experience music. Really? Really? That’s your new discovery. Right. Now, what was the other thing that just popped out that suddenly Gen Z’s figured out now that they need to educate all of us on? What’s that? mullets? Yeah, mullets are making a comeback that could have probably stayed but but I mean, it’s all of these things, all of a sudden CDs are making a comeback, all of these things. But it’s not because the boomers and the Gen Xers told them. You know, I’ve been trying to raise my son in a physical media household, right? He just bought the 14th edition of Michael Jackson’s Thriller on CD, double CD set amazing. 15 bucks at Walmart, or target. But, but most, most people have no exposure to these things. And it really, it’s making me crazy, because pretty soon, Blu ray and DVD will be making a comeback, not because streaming services are pieces of shit. But because suddenly, I mean, it’s it becomes some it’s like retro gaming, right? All of a sudden, these games that we’re going for $1.50 in the bargain bin are now 1500 bucks on ebay, not because they’re great games or not because there’s an establishment factor. It’s because a group of people, a generation who has no seemingly no identity of their own, has to lock into something that was already belonged to somebody else. And it’s it bothers me to see that all the sudden, you know, Gen Z is figuring it out. I shouldn’t be happy, right? I shouldn’t be happy that Gen Z is figuring out that CD sound better than Spotify. I should be happy about that. But it’s just sort of the the nature where it didn’t exist. It’s like Apple, right? Apple does the same thing. They invent they quote, quote, invent things all the time. Androids been doing it for 10 years. But suddenly Apple does it and it’s magic, right? You know, the iPod comes out, despite the fact that we had many mp3 players long before the iPod. Suddenly, it’s magic and Apple apples. Apples revolutionized the world. You know, smartphones, everything, you know, it’s all these things and it bothers me. I guess it bothers me it goes back to my standard tenant of credit where credit’s due. Right. So I grew up and I heard Dolly Parton’s. I will always love you song, right. Powerful song and every one of her. Her shows got a TV show it and she closed her show with that. An amazing song from an amazing woman amazing artists who actually wrote that song by the way, and that’s somebody else. And then you know, Whitney Houston shows up and records it for some You know, and now suddenly it’s the bee’s knees. But because you know, not because I’ve been running around, or somebody’s been running around saying you should probably listen to Dolly Parton. She actually has some talent. Now, all of a sudden is now because, you know, in this case, it was, you know, early gen xers, maybe Gen wires at that point, anything that moves like all the sudden it means everything. Same thing, Stranger Things, right? Stranger Things hijack an entire decade. And essentially, in a way sort of laying claim to it. Right? If you want, if you want to go out and get all the songs, all the great songs that Stranger Things has injected into their shows, you have to go and buy a Stranger Things soundtrack. Meanwhile, all of those songs are available. That property attached, and they’ve been around for a long time. Again, should I be happy that these things are actually getting there do? I don’t know, maybe? Maybe I’m just better in my old age, who knows? All I know is is it a bothers me all of a sudden everybody’s figuring out stuff that we’ve known for a super long time. And it’s no credits being given words to write. It’s not that it’s not that mom and dad have been telling you that CD sounds better than Spotify for the last 10 years. But suddenly, because one of your friends figured it out. And now you’re jumping on the bandwagon. bandwagon. I don’t like all of that nonsense. And so that bothers me too. And what also bothers me is the fact that when the newer generation discover something that the older generation loves, they try to tell the older generation that they were wrong the entire time. And they should try doing these things that we already told them. Yeah, you could introduce someone younger to. And that’s not cool. All sudden, they see their favorite show, right? And then they come back to you like, do you need to get the CDs? You’ve been doing this entire time, right? And then you have to sit there and think to yourself, how did this happen? Yeah. It’s part of the revolution, I understand that part of is the revolution, right? In the 80s, we discovered 60s clothes, and those sort of made this sort of weird comeback. I guess my point is, let’s roll back, all the way off topic here. But let’s roll back to you know, video games and like the TV and movies that we’re seeing now, these things, it’s not about infecting social justice, right? Social Justice has happened. Every single generation, every single one of them. As long as there has been media, there have been people injecting anti war, women’s rights, all of these things. Nothing’s new here, that none of this is new. But typically, in the past, when you look at the 80s, you look at the 70s. Look at the 90s there wasn’t IP theft, to forward move, the movement, right? New stuff was created to maintain the status quo of social order. You want female characters of of power grid, you want people of color in? Gray? No problem with that. I don’t think most people have a problem with that. What happens is, is when you take existing properties that we have an established canon basis of and you monkey with them, by injecting what you think not what we people who, who put bread on the table for the actors in Wonderwoman? Are the people who put bread who put food in the mouths of the kids, for people that did Ghostbusters, right? We have an expectation we have. This is ours, not yours. You bought the rights to it, but it doesn’t belong to you. You know, same thing with Lucas Lucas basically said, I don’t give a shit. If you like Star Wars the way it is, this is the way I want Star Wars. He also forgot that making making the art form making the art doesn’t give you carte blanche over forever, not in the minds of the people. And if the minds of the people are who’s paying your salary, you got to think about what that might mean. You gotta think about how how that affects things and what you’re doing to it. You’re devaluing the property by what you’re doing. You’re not increasing the value, because your value injected today will not be the same value that’s being injected that needs to be injected tomorrow. We didn’t need Velma we have a greater I went back and you don’t you guys know me right? I am a non CGI guy. I do not. I don’t mind CGI, as long as it’s kept to a minimum. I don’t want to see full characters and CGI. I don’t I don’t want my immersion broken. And when you put too much CGI into something or you make CGI the front sooner if things it starts to look fake, and I watch film or television because I want to be removed from I want to stay in. I want to be a fantasy, but I want it grounded in reality. And we don’t you don’t see. That’s the first thing my eye sees when I see when I see too much CGI, it makes me crazy. Okay, so I went back and watched recently both of the Scooby Doo movies from the 90s. Right, the ones that had Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar and Matthew Lillard in it. And I love those movies. There’s a lot of movies from the early 90s that I really enjoyed despite the fact that they’re CGI in them. And in the case of Scooby Doo, he’s all CGI. But but there’s you can get away with CGI in some cases, right? Like the Tron. If you’re inside the digital world of Tron, CGI characters absolutely make sense. The only way they could have done Scooby Doo better was to actually animate Scooby, right? So make everybody else real except for Scooby and scrappy, make them cartoons actually do it. Like the old school days, you know, Song of the South style and actually do hand drawn animation over the top of the movie that would have been that would have been perfect. That would have been absolutely amazing. But they CGI in it. So okay, but it’s still it’s still injecting something that’s not real into something that’s real. So you kind of get away with it. But my point is, those movies were great. Not because they were special effect. powerhouses, right. They were great movies, because the writing was was tight. Funny. The Canon was respected, you know, down to the wire, the Canon was respected. And I respect that I respect that they respected the canon, they didn’t try to make it something that it wasn’t to me. If you want to look at remakes or, or reimaginings, or whatever. To me, that’s like one of the perfect examples. Go back and watch the original Scooby Doo news. And then come in and watch the 90 Scooby Doo movies. You’ll understand why that works. And then go back and watch Ghostbusters. And then watch the female lead Ghostbusters. And it’s obvious put them side by side. Watch him. You’ll see you’ll understand the differences and why. And again, I’ll see if I can find that clip. I think it was critical drinker. But somebody did a great analysis of the elevator scene of the original Ghostbusters versus the new Ghostbusters. And yeah, I mean, it’s, it’s clear once you once somebody points it out to you. And you say, Dude, is this even close to being on par? And the answer is no. It’s not. It’s just a bad movie. And listen, it can be a bad movie without it being about something else. All right, I’ve got like 42 minutes on this topic. I’m bored of this topic already. Let’s see what else is going on? Where’s my knee? open my browser here. See if I have anything in my keep list to talk about? Come on load faster. PSR. Not really. I have a I have an entry here to talk about. About fall the movie fall? I’m sure I talked about it on here though. So maybe, maybe I just didn’t check mark that off. Last time I talked about it hard to say. Let me see from a personal standpoint, I’m trying to think if I have I don’t have anything new medically to talk about. I don’t have anything personally to talk about. I’ve been pretty much heads down just shooting YouTube videos, man and answering questions on Reddit. You know, trying to make the steam Deck, the most popular handheld in existence. I mean, that’s, that’s what I want to see. Right? And let’s be honest, steam deck is going through the roof. And I’m very pleased about that. And what do I mean by that? How do I how can I assure you that the steam deck is working? Well, first off, adoption is the key to everything right? So what you need for a gaming platform to survive is you need you need one of two things you either need mass adoption by the people which drives adoption by development or you need mass adoption by development, which will then drive so I think my wife is pinging me we all know that if if I don’t respond to my wife so call and interrupt the shows we don’t want that. So I will sit I will keep that window open. Yeah, so you haven’t one way or the other right either. Either your loot release a couple of exclusives that can only be played on that platform to sort of kickstart the platform and get mass adoption by the people or you get mass adoption by the people were then the developers must take notice and they must react and they must respond And so what we’re talking about now is I don’t think there’s any sales numbers out for Steam yet. For steam deck, I don’t think that there are, there might be, but I haven’t seen him. But I think somewhere I saw the term 1 million, 1 million steam decks are running around out there. And the fact that I know five people personally that have steam decks that says something, because not all of my friends are, you know, technological bandwagon errs right, my wife has a steam deck. The fact that I could sell her off of the switch or off of her phone or her tablet, that that says something I use my wife as sort of a Luddite litmus test. I should trademark that Luddite litmus test. But I’ve got I got her interested in the deck, and the deck isn’t one of her main platforms now. I mean, she’s, she’s, she’s very, she’s not brand loyal. So go, wherever her games are, or whatever she wants to play, she’ll go there. But the deck offers things that the other machines can offer. And so she likes it. But most of my friends have won. Even people that you wouldn’t think would have won in my peer group. So it’s gaining some traction with people. But more importantly, the developers are taking note. Now it doesn’t hurt at all. That valve owns the number one software deployment or software Digital Locker on the planet, which is valve steam rather. So that helps a lot. Right. But they haven’t. They haven’t abused it yet. So when you look at something like PlayStation, or Xbox or Epic Games Store, right? These people leverage exclusivity. They use product dumping, like giving away games every 25 days, whatever. They’re not standing on their own merits. They are. They’re working the system to garner mass adoption. What gets people using your platform more than anything, give everything away for free, right ask Apple they did in the education sector in the 80s. Right, we should have all been working on Commodore 60 fours in the computer lab in 1983. But we weren’t, we were all using Apple two’s despite the fact that they were completely inferior to the cheaper Commodore 64. But that’s because Apple gave it away to everybody. Product dumping is a very effective way of gaining market share, ask Epic Games, as frickin Apple, they know all about it. But my point is, is Valve has not level leveraged that exclusivity in any way shape, or form with the steam deck. But what’s happening is the developers are taking note they are witnessing, or at least they’re more privy to what the potential future might hold. And the steam deck has an amazing community behind it, you can tell that by going to read it or going to other social media that steam deck is has a lot of supporters. You know, all of these Linux people that have been living in a cave, because they won’t, they won’t come out and see the windows light. These people have a champion now. And these people, these people don’t, aren’t necessarily the social justice frontier type people, but they have a long reach. And they’ve got a lot of numbers, and they’ve got a lot of intelligence behind them. You know, your average Linux person has to be smarter than your average Windows person just to get Linux running, you know, I’m saying so these it’s a different, it’s a different platform. It’s a different audience. But then they have a lot of numbers, and they are backing this product. But more importantly, as I was trying to get to was the developers, right, the developers have, have backed to this platform, or they’re starting to, aside from like EA, and Ubisoft and all these other groups, that every time you turn around their dam launchers are broken on Steam deck. Aside from that, though, you can if you start looking at popular games, like hog, the new hardware game that’s coming out steam deck verified, and they are on Twitter right now promoting the fact that Hogwarts steam deck verified, steam that verified is actually like the new Nintendo Seal of Approval. Right? If they advertise that having that on day one is suddenly a priority for a lot of developers that has value to the platform, a lot of value to the platform, because what’s going to happen is the people sitting I mean, I’m preaching to the choir, most of you already know this. But once once the once the people who are sitting on the sidelines realize that the developers are getting behind it. That’s when it’ll go from a wishy washy. What is that called bullish versus bear? Trying to do some stock market stuff there but they’re a little bullish about it right? What’s going to seal the deal is seeing their favorite games being steamed. I verified if you wanting to play Hogwarts, and you you know you don’t have a powerful enough PC to do it or you’ve got an old generation console, whatever I mean, whatever reason it is that you want to play that and you suddenly see steam deck very Fighting, you’re on the fence trying to decide whether you’re gonna get steamed back or not. That can push people over the edge. So yeah, listen, it’s working. It’s slow going. It’s working. It’s helping Linux adoption of the platform. It’s helping Windows adoption of the platform. So I think what we’re seeing is we’re not quite there yet. Right? We need a little bit more mass inertia. But it’s getting close. Now, to be honest, what valve needs to do if they they may not want mass inertia? They might be totally happy with this trickle inertia, if you will. Right, they’re probably they’re probably selling there. In fact, I know, they’re selling these things as fast as they can make them. That’s to many companies that success and maybe to valve that’s their success. If they want the next level, right, they need to be there needs to be a demo kiosk at target with a steam deck on it. That’s how you get mass inertia with users. People want a steam deck, but they want to touch it, they want to try it, they want to feel it. They’re concerned, it’s too heavy, they’re concerned, it’s too big, they’re concerned, it doesn’t run a game. Well, they got all sorts of concerns, it’s keeping them from pulling the trigger. Right. But if they can put their hands on one soul, they can see their favorite game running on it. So if they can realize that the ergonomics of it are incredible, they be sold, but they can’t, unless somebody they know has one. Right? So they tell two friends and they tell two friends and so on and so on. Right. But I think it’s coming. I think it’s I think it’s getting there. And I think I think I think it’s going to work out I do. I’m very I’m very skeptical about what are the what are the blue ocean type stuff like Nintendo? Right? The Wii was blue ocean. That was that was industry disruption at one of its probably its most referenceable and beautiful implementations, right? The we changed history. Not everybody can do that. Will the steam deck change history? Probably not. But maybe, right? The if the, if the direction is portability. And that’s what people want. And they’re getting sick of digital lockers and they’re getting sick of, of DRM and they’re getting well, I mean, steam has DRM sort of, but my point is, is that when people are tired of something, they will help affect the change. They’re gonna grab whoever’s there with the least path of resistance. And I think that’s what the steam deck is. I think that when people are tired of 600, ollar consoles, right? They’re tired of, they’re tired of exclusivity, they’re tired of all that nonsense. They’ll be looking for someplace to go. And right now, the only the not the console, handheld console, I’m grouping them all together. The biggest gaming platform out there, right now is the PC right? Personal Computer. There’s more to play on the PC than anywhere else. Period. You buy an Xbox, you buy a PlayStation, you buy a switch, you have a mark, you have you have a storefront. And what is there is what you’ve got the PC not so and the deck really just a PC happens to have a nice little shell on top of it. But it’s still just a PC, which means the most software library they say the software library makes the platform right, go back in history and look at every successful platform versus every failed platform. 99% of the time, the difference is software base. Did the developers develop for it? Did they adopt it? date was there buy in from the publishers, all of those things happen? The deck the day you buy it has a library of like 20,000 titles. I mean, not all of them are great on deck, right? But but let’s be honest, if you buy a PC for the purposes of playing as many games as you possibly can, the steam deck works exactly the same way. So I mean, listen, you buy a switch, you got access to hundreds of games, you buy a deck, you got access of 10s of 1000s of games. And almost all of them in one way or another are available on the Steam deck. Right. If you’re willing to go with emulation, you even add more to the equation. So I do I think that the I think the steam deck is the right way forward. For everybody, publishers, developers, users, I think that’s the right way to go. We do have a battery problem. I think what we need is a five hour solution for the steam deck, whatever that takes. Because right it works for switch people aren’t complaining about switches battery life, and it’s five hours ish ish, right? So I think steam deck two what’s going to happen is everyone’s Oh, I’m gonna wait for the steam deck to Well, first of all, you’re kind of wasting your time because nobody knows anything about the steam deck too. But from what I understand the steam deck two is essentially going to be more power, longer battery life and up Under screen, they don’t want to change the internals because then you start breaking stuff, right? Then you split the skew. So now if you’ve got software that runs on Steam deck, and then you got stuff that runs on Steam deck to ask, ask Facebook, how that’s working out for questing question, right? So, same kind of idea. So I don’t think they want to change the internal powers, internal horsepower of the unit. But let’s be honest, give me an OLED screen, make it the full size and give it to the bezel. And, excuse me, I’m losing my voice here. And, and give me five hours of battery life. My friends, I am there, you will see me immediately buying a steam deck too, despite the fact that it has no more memory. No more video processing power. That’s, that’s the next evolution of steam deck. And I think that’s where it’ll end up going. And I think that that’s the smartest thing that they could do. So let’s see. So what else am I playing, we’re kicking up to the 55 minute mark here. 56 minute mark. So I’m also playing Hi Fi rush, which is really, really cool. By the way, it’s really funny because Hi Fi rush came out at 30 bucks at the same time that for smoking came out at 70 bucks. And I guess I guess Hi Fi Rush is beating the living crap out of the first brokens revenue stream which is where it shouldn’t be because Hi Fi Rush is a great game and for spoken is pretty shitty game. So we can we can figuratively say that. Let’s see what else I’ve been playing with turn on my deck here and see what else I got. This is the one advantage of being here is that I can at my desk I can actually go in and look at things on my deck or bring something up on the web, which is harder to do when I’m sitting in the hot tub or driving my car right. I’m still playing Overwatch too. I have a problem with Overwatch too. I play it every day. What else do I have installed on? I’m playing a lot of dead space of course. We talked about that deep rock galactic I got into that a little bit. Although I’ve been distracted. Immortals, Phoenix Rising, I started getting into that a new game called nebula Nebula is really cool. If you haven’t seen it, I did. Look here on YouTube. If you’re here, I did a video review of it. I was working with a developer on testing on the Steam deck. And it’s great. It’s sort of vampire survivors in space only better. The best way I can describe it for you. Let’s see been playing some Battlefront two, by the way, the battlefront two on the Steam deck is frickin amazing. It’s absolutely beautiful. Looks beautiful run super smooth. Titanfall two went back to that again. Titanfall two is an amazing campaign feels a lot like the early Call of Duty’s it’s like it was like $2 I don’t know if it’s still that price right now. But less than $2. If you don’t own it, and it’s on Steam, you don’t have to even use separate Digital Locker for that. And that’s mostly what I’m implying. And of course, you know, doing videos for YouTube anywho well, we’ll be at least I had one person in the chat, I was hoping that this area of the screen, this area of the screen would be a little more full. But this was an experiment. Who knows I might even release this video, who knows. But at least it was an idea. So thank you will be if you’re still hanging out. Thank you for joining the live chat. Appreciate that. And I’m sorry more of you didn’t get an opportunity to join the live chat this time, but maybe next time. Okay, well listen, I think I’ve blabbed enough for one day, my voice is starting to go a little bit and started to get some drainage going on here. So that’s probably not good either. So I will leave you with with this. Thanks again, everyone. So much new listeners old listeners. Much appreciated. Yeah, thanks. We’ll be alright, I’m gonna get out of here. I’m gonna go and try to do something productive. This is Shane R Monroe passenger seat radio. We will see you next time and take care
